MIAMI -- Alonzo Mourning looked well Friday.
Six months removed from the kidney transplant that ended his NBA career, the 6-foot-10-inch, 34-year-old Mourning hung out at the ninth hole of Doral's famed Blue Monster golf course.
He mingled with foursomes participating in Zo's Golf Classic, took pictures with the golfers and sliced 6-iron shots while vainly trying to hit the green on the par-3 hole.
This is life for Mourning, and he says he loves it.
"My kids are relishing the time that Daddy's home because they're so used to me being gone all the time," Mourning said."
He said he has no designs on ever returning to the NBA.
"The transplant, the whole procedure was a success," he said. "Right now I'm trying to focus on making sure my body keeps this kidney for another 50 years, hopefully."
Mourning's transplant came as a result of the kidney ailment focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.
Mourning realizes he's much better off now than he was six months ago. At that time, he ended his eight-year career with the Heat and signed a contract with the New Jersey Nets.
He retired in November, saying he needed a transplant.
"I'm not disappointed at all with how things turned out," Mourning said. "Obviously, I wanted to play ball some more, but I think I put my time in.
"I played over 10 or 11 years, productive years. There's some things I wanted to get accomplished, but that's unfortunate. You've got to move on with your life. There's more to life than athletics."
