If you want my opinion, it is this: As much of anything else, the past four months have been about remaking the team into a completely different form. How often does a team have the opportunity to remake an entire roster from top to bottom? The Nets had that opportunity, and make no mistake about it: They are doing so with a top-to-bottom plan in mind. Part of that plan is to emphasize defense--from top to bottom, everyone will be able to defend and will do so consistently. Players unable to do that, or undisciplined to do it consistently, have all been let go, or will be. They have been replaced by disciplined players who can accept and play within a system, are team oriented, and put a focus on defense. The players the Nets have signed and drafted were no accident.
That said, it wasn't hard to predict who would be on their way out when the off-season began. There was absolutely no way that Boki was coming back. I am still surprised that they are considering resigning Krstic, but that may well be a ruse. Swift and Marcus are both clearly not coming back, and I think it is greater than 50% that Ager won't be coming back as well (although we didn't see enough of him to really assess him, so maybe there are other views about him among the coaching staff).
This off-season has been about LAWRENCE FRANK and giving him the players he wanted and needed to run the team the way he wants to.

I understand what you're saying about most of the players we have signed so far, but all the players we drafted have been the number one scoring options on their team and considered average at best defenders. Najera and Dooling are very good defenders but out of all the other players we have aquired, who was brought here for defense?

That should definitely be in the back of everyone's mind with every signing and every review of the offseason.
This season will be a definite test for Frank. They're going out and getting guys that he should favor - more defensive, hardworking, coach-friendly players. Anything less than 30 wins with this group, I think it'll be a disappointment.

those are good points. I could easily be overestimating those things, which is why I say there's still hope for marcus. I guess my best response is that defense is for the most part a learned skill, and there are few college players that are real standouts defensively. This year, who would qualify? Westbrook? Anyone else? Kyle Weaver had a strong rep, but had other weaknesses. The Nets didn't take anyone incapable of playing defense (allegedly), and the players they did take do bring other talents to the table other than scoring. . . . I wonder, though, if they really would have taken Gallinari if they had the chance. That would have blown this all to hell.
