So who were the 5 or 6 veteran wings that Neil targeted?

Top Gun was and is cringe-worthy.

Top Gun was and is all about that testosterone boosting roar of that F-14A Tomcat fighter. That scene on the aircraft carrier was the go-to clip for sales of surround sound systems for a decade after the movie's debut. Plot - crap. Acting - crap. Cool factor at the time- off the charts.

Top Gun is sooo bad and cheesy but in an epic 80's way. It's great entertainment.

Yep, it's a crap movie overflowing with crappy actors and crappy dialogue.

But, I saw it in the theater when it came out and it was the first movie I rented when I bought my first VHS HiFi VCR and again, the first movie I rented a couple years later when I bought my first Dolby 5.1 Surround System.

I haven't watched in since. I grew weary of the whole home theater thing. I now have a dedicated sound system for music (two actually) and watch TV and movies for the quality of the story, acting, production cinematography, etc. rather than the booming special effects. Explosions that shake my walls stopped impressing me around 1992. I don't need that to enjoy a good story told well.
