OT Something nice I read about Portland

I'm not leaving inner city Portland. We could sell our place, and for what things are going for in my hood, we could move to the burbs and get a McMansion. Rather live in a 97 year old fixer upper though. Right now we couldn't afford a house in our own neighborhood, so we just refinanced and are going to do a ton of projects. We'll get our money back, but it just blows me away how much cribs are going for. This is my neighborhood below......

My uncle lives right there on Alameda and 47th. Nice house, he used to live right across the street, but bought the other house across the street because he wanted the view in his backyard. I had no idea he paid a cool mil for it.

Hey Minstrel, I am trying to decide between four SF restaurants - all great Yelp reviews, all Top 100. Do you know Bay restaurant scene perchance?
Pabu, Akiko, Boulevard, Kokkari

I haven't actually tried Akiko, I couldn't comment on it at all. The other three are great, the only way I'd differentiate them, other than actual cuisine, is in terms of atmosphere/ambiance. I think Pabu's izakaya style is the most interesting of the three.

Man is Portland and the State ripping you guys off!
You are paying far more in school tax per student that anywhere else in the state and receiving the lest amount of state school aid per student than anywhere in the state.
The largest amount of monies paid by the State goes to school systems surrounding Portland, basically just outside the Urban Growth boundary.
Wonder how that happens?

But really.... there's more than one kind of minimalism. You like to "party on" (bro). You don't need as much home space cuz it seems like you're always out eating, going out, seeing and doing things.

For some.... minimalism is more about keeping things simple, enjoying the comforts of home, relaxing at home. That's how I roll. I spend most of my summer relaxing in the backyard, grilling and drinking. Maybe listening to a little music.

Just in the past year, the rent for my 1 bedroom apartment here in Vancouver went up from $585, to $670, and now it's $918 a month. In one year.

I think prices everywhere are going up, but it's probably most painful in places like Portland.

I socialize with people with whom I disagree on some issues, of course - how often do we meet someone with whom we are in accord 100% of the time? But they have to at least support my equal civil rights. Anyone who does not agree with that is not someone with whom I voluntarily associate.

The first part of your post, I agree: prices in the Bay Area are fucking ridiculous. But I think (though I'm not up-to-date on Bay Area rates of pay) that the income is higher in the Bay Area than here.

It's the same reason the barren oil fields in the Dakotas are so expensive to live in: the folks that work those fields make enormous amounts of money for the work they do.
