15 years and 775 million. Glad the yanks didn’t spend all that money on one guy. Now fill a bunch of the holes you have on that team with the money.
 
The Yankees actually offered 760 and 16 years which is obscene. Enjoy hitting at citifield without judge batting behind you

I'll give you a Mets fans perspective, this is a great move for them. There is no salary cap in baseball (a tax, but Cohen doesn't care), so the Mets can and will add more. The deal has an opt out after 5-years, so the Mets get Soto through his age 30 season at least. And they take him away from the Yanks, which is a blow to them despite how you guys may want to spin it...;). This is an absolute no-brainer winning move for the Mets for a total stud who is only 26. As for Judge/Soto, last I checked Judge doesn't hit in the playoffs, but Soto certainly does, another plus. Judge is also 32. And up until Soto got to town the Yanks hadn't made the WS since 2009.

Almost no player is worth that much money, so you could say it is a bit much, but that was the going rate, and multiple teams were over $700M total from what I read. That's the cost of doing business and signing a stud at only 26.

We'll see how it goes, but happy Mets fan here.

A lot of money for one guy yes, but now Trashman will go overspend on guys like Alonso, watch. Alonso is not what this team needs. We already have a full time DH and my grandmother who’s been dead for 15 years plays a better first base than him. Get ready for an AWFUL couple of signings in which we overpay dearly and/or trades where we trade the little bit of young talent we have for a player that barely will make us better. Not even worth watching this team this season or for a few. Gonna waste the last of Judge’s peak years.
 
Soto will no longer benefit from Yankee Stadium's short RF porch and will no longer have the protection of having Judge hitting behind him so some of his numbers will likely dip ...Soto is a good hitter but a very mediocre defender (-5.1 WAR for his career)... and there's no way that he's worth double the money of Judge.

Over-extended contracts never age well, especially when they take the player to the age of 41...I hope Mets fans are happy with the deal because they will have to live with it for 15 years.

Personally, I'm glad the Yanx didn't resign him and have been saying so for months now, at least with a contract that would hamstring the Yanx for many years to come. If Hal has $50 mil per to spend on Soto + another $30 Mil coming off the books, all of that money will go a long way to restructure our roster with solid and smart players that will improve our offense, defense, and pitching and also pointed to this months ago.

Overall, I feel better about the direction of the Yanx than I did this time yesterday.

I get it, he left so you guys have to come up with rationalizations why he isn't worth it, or flaws he may have, etc. I understand how fans work.

Here is what I know:

Yanks hadn't made the WS since 2009, Soto comes for one year and the Yanks are in the WS.
Soto hits in the playoffs, Judge does not (I can read playoff game thread after playoff game thread where you all got on Judge).
Soto only just turned 26 (Judge is 32).
Talking about D, remind me but didn't Judge in CF cost you a WS game? Soto is fine, not good, but not awful. He's whatever/fine.
There is no salary cap in baseball, so if Cohen wants to spend, fine by me. If anything I think this makes him spend even more now to complete the team.
Seems like multiple teams were willing to pay Soto over $700M, including the Yanks at $760M, so it isn't as if the Mets were alone in their big pursuit.

So, please don't try to pour cold water on the huge W this is for the Mets, and L it is for the Yanks. With that said, the Yanks will be fine. They have plenty of money to spend, and I expect they add some very good players. Maybe Fried or Burnes, or Sasaki. I am sure they'll add a big hitter, or two.

The Yanks will go on, but this is a very good day for the Mets, and a down day for the Yanks.

I agree with you 59. The only thing that gives me pause is if cashman is the right guy to do this. His team construction has sucked for a long time. One key regardless is the Martian stepping up and being the player we’ve been told he will be. This week will be a bunch of player signings and trades. We’ll have a better idea of what the yanks will look like by next weekend. I’m amazed Hal went as far as he did measuring dicks with cohen. Very surprised for the difference in money he chose the Mets over the yanks. Soto turned out to be as advertised….. a greedy motherfucker who is a very good offensive player, is one of the worst defensive outfielders I’ve ever seen and is clueless on the basepaths. The yanks will be fine without him! Wish he would have told Hal I’m not signing unless Cashman and Boone are fired!
 
If it works out for the Mets then good for them. Regardless of the teams involved these contracts are ridiculous. Plus, he’s not better than Ohtani by any metric. Soto no doubt is a great player who is now in the prime of his career. That being said when you look at his overall numbers what jumps out as omg he’s worth a contract like this?
 
Agree on contracts in general, but that's the point isn't it. These sports contracts are crazy, not just the Soto deal. And the proof is in the pudding, the Yanks offered $760M, and he picked the Mets. Other teams offered over $700M, and he picked the Mets. So, these teams all thought Soto was worth over $700M, not just the Mets.

I gave up griping about the size of these ridiculous monopoly money contracts a long time ago unless a contract hamstrings your team, due to a salary cap or an owner not willing to spend after signing the player to a contract. Neither is the case with Cohen/Soto, so it is what it is. Not my money, won't hamstring my team, who cares is how I see it.

As for Soto/Ohtani, agreed Ohtani is better, and he'll pitch next season also only adding to his value. But that doesn't really matter does it? Soto is one of the best hitters in baseball, top 3 or 4 at worst. He also produces in big spots, won a WS as the cleanup hitter in DC and helped lead the Yanks to the WS for the first time since 2009. He's also only 26 and entering his prime. And lastly, we live in the here and now and this was the going rate. Not like the Mets were the only team offering over $700M, so he went there by default. He picked the Mets over the Yanks and over other teams offering $700M +.

I know you guys don't want to hear this, but for as great as Judge is, what has he done winning team wise? He doesn't hit in the playoffs, he's 32 and plays next season at 33 (Soto just turned 26), you knock Soto's D when Judge literally cost you a WS game due to his terrible D in CF, and Judge made zero WS trips until Soto came along. In 7 seasons, Soto made a WS as a Yank and won a WS in DC.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, but the rationalizations are funny to me. Just be honest, this is a blow to the Yanks, and a win for the Mets. And once again, the Yanks will be fine and I expect them to make some moves to get their team right back near the top, especially in a weaker AL.

BTW - multiple things can be true, and while this is a blow, the Yanks could be better big picture when all is said and done with the right moves before next season. In no way am I saying that's it the Yanks are done, not by a long shot.

Honestly, it depends on what the Yankees do from here. I’ve said for a long time give me a handful of solid players over just one guy. That’s why those 90s teams won.
 
94, u do realize that was the only error judge made the entire season in CF. And shortly before that he made a spectacular play at the left cf wall. Statistically, judge is the far better player than Soto, both offensively and defensively and baserunning. If Soto doesn’t want to be here I say good riddance and we’ll move on.
 
No debate on Judge, he's great. Point is he made the error that cost you a WS game, not the "awful defensively" Soto (which you guys are overstating). And despite how great Judge is, and even with all the resources the Yanks have, he had never made a WS until Soto was his teammate, he plays next season at 33, and he is terrible in the playoffs. Sorry, but that's the truth.

If you said which player would you rather have for the next 3 years, it's Judge. If you said which player would you rather have for the next 10 years, it's Soto and it isn't close.

I do fully agree with your last line though mel, if Soto doesn't want to be a Yankee, good riddance, that's spot on. Doesn't mean it's not a loss or blow to the Yanks, but it is 100% how I'd view it if I were a Yankee fan.

Agreed, and I hated those 90's teams...lol. Being a Mets fan with all Yankees fan friends was not easy. I was at game 3 in the 2000 WS, and that was not a fun night, or series, for me.

You guys are funny...I love the rationalizations and spin of fans. Nothing wrong with that though, what fans do.

We don't want Soto, he's flawed, he's bad defensively. Judge who has never done anything in the playoffs individually or for the team (never made the WS until Soto was on the team), is a god (forget post after post knocking him in the playoffs).

As it turns out, the main snag in negotiations with Soto, was that the Yanx were unwilling to GIVE him a luxury box at The Stadium...Judge had to pay for his, Ditto with Jeter.
 
More and more whining from Soto's camp about petty thing he thought he was entitled to...but evidently he would have overlooked them if the Yanx had given him more money.

Fuck this guy...good riddance.
 
Mets Fans will find out soon enough that Soto is a one dimensional player with shit for Defense!
