Source: Blazers Identified As 'Wild Card' For Omer Asik

I think Bass and Lee helps Houston. Doesn't jump them up a level but makes them deeper with a couple vet players who can help from time to time.

Not sure what to make out of Houston. I thought they would be a top 3 team with Harden and Howard. Lin is underperforming but they have a good find in Beverly. Not a team I would want to face in the first round.

If Boston/Houston do an Asik deal, does that make a theoretical Hawes to Portland deal slightly more likely?

A guy can hope, can't he?

I never thought we wanted Asik, but helping facilitate and getting an asset would have been the most likely IMO

The question was asked if Portland was interested in Asik. So being a third team for other players can still be in play. I'm just glad we didn't jump the gun and try and get Asik.

It could be entirely possible. It would be foolish of Philly to just let Hawes walk after this season. I think we have the tanking pieces they need! :ghoti:

Ain't no tank like a Meyers Leonard tank, 'cause a Meyers Leonard tank don't stop!

More like the Rockets floated Portland's name to generate a better deal. Nothing to see here.

This is why I hate fan created trade threads. Hey can we get lebron for Barton and a thank you card?

Our defense is ranked poorly because we by design give up certain types of shots. We're winning games and have a great point differential. Asik may theoretically be able to grab more rebounds, but when you take EVERYTHING into context of defense (man-to-man, boxing out, pnr, passing lanes, weak-side coverage, etc.) I take Robin. Look at the freaking impact he's had on all of the other starters! Yeah, guys just fit really freaking well on offense together, but it's not a coincidence that they're all averaging career highs in rebounding. BNM throw down some numbers to dispel this please.

Yeah, it gives us another big, but unless he's cool with coming off of the bench AND if we don't have to give up anything significant (then why the crap would Houston do it? they have such a high premium for him in their minds), I'd do it, but not otherwise. To me it's only a possibility on paper, but shouldn't be realistic.

The problem with that theory is that we aren't giving up the types of shots that our defense is designed to give up (long mid-range jumpers). Instead we're giving up high-percentage shots in the paint.

Only 3 teams have allowed more made baskets within 5' of the hoop. Only 2 teams have allowed more attempts within '5 of the hoop. Luckily our OppFG% in that range is fairly good - but that doesn't change the fact that we're in the Top 4 for getting scored on at point-blank range.

Step it out to the jump-hook to bunny-jumper/floater range - 5-9' - and we're the #1 most scored on team AND give up the most attempts.

I know we're winning games right now. But let's not pretend that we're a juggernaut. There's plenty of room for improvement - especially on the defensive end. Lopez has done a great job, and the others are all playing better because of him. But we aren't anywhere close to where we need to be, defensively, to think about winning a championship.

Any chance Olshey is throwing around ideas just to see what teams are planning, without actually trying to close a deal? These talks are interesting, it sounds like Houston won’t trade with us directly, they want him to go to an East team, but a team like Philly can flip Asik back to us or any West team. Remember, Asik can be traded by himself at any time, he just can’t be packaged in a trade with other players until the trade deadline. But if Olshey gets the Rockets to delay trading Asik for a few more days out of fear Asik may be re-dealt back West, it could prevent the rockets from acquiring players they can re-deal at the deadline.
