My buddy got a speeding ticket today. Looking at the ticket the cop wrote tomorrow's date on it. He wants to know if the cop writing the wrong date on the ticket gets him out of the ticket.

I told him that he could bring it up to the judge when he goes to court but I doubt it would get him out of the ticket.

Any ideas on what he should do or if that invalidates the ticket?

As long as he doesn't speed tomorrow, he is totally fine

When I was young and foolish I tried getting out of a ticket on the same grounds - the cop had made some mistakes on the ticket.
Didn't work, the judge said, and I'm paraphrasing only slightly, "pay up, you dirty hippie, and then get the fuck out of my courtroom".

I later tried to argue that another ticket for running a stop sign should be thrown out because the stop sign was not regulation height, was obscured by trees, etc. Same result.

Were the trees the right height? I guess what I'm asking you is, was this in Michigan?

No, but I was driving a couple of Cadillacs when I got the ticket.

any sort of fuck by the cop up at all will def get him out of the ticket, or at least have it dropped down to a minuscule amount...assuming the guy actually wants to go to trial for it

first off, he needs to drop it off with the "ill see you in court" box checkmarked, ive never just paid a ticket outright

ive semi plea bargained day of at the courthouse with the cop to knock tickets down a notch, say from a 20 over, to a 10 over, that should be a slam dunk at least

one time they said they werent allowed to do it, then did it anyways. that time though, he said that they could bargain, but they are supposed to do it BEFORE the court date, so maybe call the police station and tell them you want to get it dropped, they will prolly either drop it, or plea down to nearly nothing

...or they will be sending a correction in the mail. This happened to me in California a few years ago and within 48 hours I received a notice of the "correction".

Bring proof you were somewhere else that day and leave it at that.

Case closed.

It's a good argument but probably wouldn't stick, IMO. But I always appeal each ticket. You have a chance that the officer doesn't show up. It's a slim chance (1 time out of 6 the cop didn't show); but if the cop doesn't show, the case is immediately dismissed. What are you going to lose anyway? Just some free time. You can still request "traffic school" and the fine is the same regardless.

Last time I showed up ready to argue my photo radar ticket. The cop showed up and seemed to be very prepared. I had some arguments, but ultimately decided to just not contest and he reduced the fine by $50. Save yourself the time and just either pay the ticket or send in a letter requesting a reduction. Going to the courthouse will be a minimum 2 hours.

Retain a team of attorneys, buy off some wino to give you an alibi and go for it.
