The state Supreme Court removed the “three-Californias” initiative from the November ballot Wednesday but said it would decide later whether the plan to break up the state was within the voters’ power to consider at a future election.

In a unanimous order, the six justices said that “significant questions regarding the proposition’s validity” and that the “potential harm” of allowing a public vote before those question are resolved “outweighs the potential harm in delaying the proposition to a future election.”

The court said it would consider both sides’ arguments at a hearing before deciding whether to place the measure on the 2020 ballot.

I could see splitting it into two states and adding Puerto Rico, but 3 seems like too much.

If California does split up, one of the pieces should be named Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

I'm against it.

I don't even think it's Constitutional.

There is a constitutional process for splitting a state. It's happened before.

Whoops, N. Carolina and South Carolina, also, Virginia and West Virginia. The two Carolinas might have been two of the thirteen original, now that I think about it.

Kentucky split from Virginia, and Maine split from Massachusetts.

Yeah, although I did enjoy the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. The Plains states to me were the "Never again" states.
We stopped at a little motel in the middle of nowhere and I tried to get my naive wife to buy some Rocky Mountain oysters in the motel's restaurant. Even though we had only been married for 14 years she was wise to me, dammit.

So funny, I was telling a friend today about me attempt to eat one. I have no idea why it seemed to be a good idea, I dont even like real oysters. All I can tell you is that there were many beers involved, and one was enough.

Well, the two Virginians were due to the South seceding, so that whole thing was unconstitutional besides West Virginia staying loyal...

"New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

It seems pretty cut and dried that California can split up or vote to do so. But they must then petition Congress
to authorize.

Given the Gerrymandered way proposed, it would give the Current California four more Democrat Senators.
As well as four more electoral votes. I suspect it would result in the electoral votes being less of a given.
But probability of four more Democrats in the Senate is likely the end of this scheme.

Unless of course, the Gerrymander is changed. That might make it possible, resulting one or two of the states more open an competitive in the electoral election process.

You're wrong.

One was definitely plenty for me too. Although I have to say I've eaten worse since.

Yeah... they did for awhile, though, on the back side of NH where Vermont is now.

I love oysters on the half shell (Fanny Bays are my favorite) but I won't even look at a Rocky Mountain oyster let alone eat one and if I smelled one, cooked or raw, I'd probably puke.
