This is really good if you've never seen it:

Before I read this whole thread, I want to say I was disappointed in the "surprise." I hadn't heard anything except that there was a surprise. Solo being killed didn't shock me. It was like Obi Wan getting killed in Ep 1. It wasn't til after the movie that I realized that was the surprise. I was hoping it would be something to do with Luke. Especially since he wasn't on the poster. Good for Mark Hamil that he now has an acting job besides voice over work again.

Do you mean Qui-Gon? Also, Mark Hammill has been in a few episodes of The Flash as The Trickster.

Also it was just weird when Rey froze up and said "THE FORCE" or whatever whenever the Kylo Ren guy said he can train her in the Force...which was also a bit weird. Also how she knew all of the sudden about Jedi Mind tricks.

That part of the movie pissed me off. Padawans are sometimes trained since birth. She had NO training whatsoever and suddenly she can whoop a Sith Lord with a lightsaber she was previously afraid to touch....

I just think they could have gone so many different directions that would have been better.

The rise of the sith again on Corraban.

Luke restarts the Jedi academy.

They're essentially rehashing the original trilogy. Now it's not the Rebellion, it's the Resistance...... ohhhhhhhhhhhh big difference.

Killing off Solo as lame as fuck. His kid is an emo bitch, and the fact that he could be bested by some chick who had never experienced any training whatsoever is pretty sad. She goes from zero powers, to suddenly using force persuasion and moving objects. That's with zero training. She just knows what to do? There's no back story on the new bad guys. There's no story about the Republic. The world killer weapon is ridiculous.

Fucking.

Spot.

On.

Just to be a douche I am gonna ruin Episode VIII for you nerds:

Just saw it last night (I know, I am behind the times. Damn thing was always sold out).

I give it a very solid 9.0 out of 10.0

It was not perfect (of course) but it did a lot of things well. My gripes are minor; Carrie Fisher doesn't seem Leia anymore to me (And not due to looks. Just the "talk" wasn't even there), the random wake-up of R2-D2 and I guess some small plot holes but I think those will be revealed better in the next one.

My wife did say it seemed too funny to her though. Almost a spoof or parody. I didn't get that from it personally but she isn't the only one who has mentioned that to me after I told people I saw it.

We don't know that she had no training is the thing. They hint that she may have had training and she just repressed (or "they - someone" blocked) it.

I'll believe it when they show more of her back story. Until then I'm calling bull. They show her grow up on that Tatooine like planet since she was a kid. Luke Skywalker is about to train her now.

I think she's JarJar in drag.

And in the next movie she will kill Luke Skywalker.

I also thought it was a little too funny, or maybe just that it wasn't funny in the right ways. "Droid please" sticks out to me, along with a few other lines that I actually can't remember off the top of my head. I think I chuckled and then immediately started thinking it felt a little out of place. They almost seemed like Joss Whedon style quips.

My turn to chime in after seeing it over the weekend.

Random Thoughts:
The bad
-Why the hell should I care about Poe Damaron (sic?) at all?
-The deus ex machina of the ground conveniently opening up to save Kylo Ren from Rey.
-Way too many nostalgia callbacks
-Carrie Fisher's plastic surgeon
-Fin and Poe hugging it out like long lost bros after only spending about ten minutes together on the Star Destroyer.
-After this many years you'd think the Empire would have figured out their space-engineering and built a death-star without such an easily exploitable fatal design flaw (I swear to god it's like they got the engineers who made the Pinto).
-Why does Rey save BB-8 from a scrapper and then offer the lame ass explanation that "he doesn't respect anything or anyone?" Oooo-Kay!
-
What the hell made R2-D2 wake up? "Space magic?"
-What was with Rey being such a badass at everything (an abandoned child who has been living off "half-portions" for 20 years and sells scrap like a meth-head)?
  • Better pilot/mechanic with the Millenium Falcon than Han, the guy who's owned the fucker for 150 years (I'm just guessing Harrison Ford's current age based on his appearance)?
    Checkmark-icon.png
  • Better swordsman than a guy who has been training with a lightsaber for 15-20 years?
    Checkmark-icon.png
  • Somehow knows the Jedi mind-trick ten minutes after being interrogated by a force user when it took Luke years to figure out?

Where the hell is her character arc supposed to go from here? (Hopefully she goes power-mad and turns to the darkside)

The good
-Fin was an interesting character (too bad his was the only one with a real arc or any kind of tension)
-Killing Han Solo was easy to predict and I was fine with it (old age was about to kill his ass in a year or two anyway).
-The CGI was mostly really, really good. The only exception is Moz (or whatever her name was)
-No more midichlorian bullshit
-Action sequences were properly "actiony"
-No more dull Senate sequences where they talk at length about space taxes
-The movie was well made, well shot and had a nice pace.

Overall
It doesn't really work as a self-contained movie with the cliff-hanger ending, but it felt like a real Star Wars movie and the last time I could say that was 1983. Hopefully now that all of the "nostalgia trip" bullshit is out of the way, Abrams and Kasdan can go their own way with the franchise without feeling like they have to pander so hard to old fucking nerds (like me). Hopefully the next one can challenge Empire in terms of quality and depth. I give it a solid 8 out of 10.

Rian Johnson (Looper) is writing and directing Episode VIII. Abrams is just a producer and Kasdan doesn't look to be involved at all.

"They wanted to do a retro movie. I don't like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."

-George Lucas

Well, Lucas is right about one thing. If he'd had any kind of creative control he certainly would have 'mucked it up' just like he says in the interview.

Finn is a cool cat, I also wonder what his arc will end up being, just a regular Joe, kinda good at everything? Def gonna be reys love interest id bet.

Kylo even though immature or whatever, was a bad ass I thought. Dude is a kid, that's why he was...a kid.

Don't care about Rey as much as I'm supposed to probably.

Nazi/ pink Floyd hammer imagery was cheesy.

Han is too old for this shit. Leia as well, the acting was FORCED. get it?

Luke looks pissed and is gonna be a bamf.

Poe as hotshot pilot, meh.

I'd say I like finn the best, hope he becomes a beast.

Finally had a day off and took The HCP Jr. Monday night...... that movie was FANTASTIC! Can't wait to read this thread.

I didn't hate Finn but some of his dialogue was pretty stupid in my opinion. "Droid please" and especially "you got a boyfriend?" stuck out to me. I thought Poe was much cooler, I wish he had more screen time. Finn just kind of ruined the immersion for me at some points. His character seemed like he'd fit better in a Marvel movie than a Star Wars movie. I've seen it twice now and I didn't think anything Finn said or did was funny the second time around.
