This morning Steve Kyler talked about a report from ESPN's Michael Wilbon that Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy could find himself out of a job if the Magic don't at least make it to the NBA Finals. Currently sitting down 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Boston Celtics, that looks unlikely.
Kyler was emphatic that Van Gundy wasn't in danger of losing his job if the Celtics win the series, though he did indicate Van Gundy's rope might get a tad shorter.
At today's shootaround in Orlando before Game 5 of the series, Van Gundy responded to Wilbon's comments to Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel. He also intimated he knew why Wilbon would say such a thing in the first place.
"No, I'm not worried about my job security and I'm less worried about what Michael Wilbon would think about anything," Van Gundy said. " … People comment on things and that's fine –whatever. Michael Wilbon, to my knowledge, has never done anything competitive, never been in a locker room. Never had to play, never had to coach, never had to make a decision. He's one of those guys who is a talking head."
"I've refused to be on PTI (Pardon the Interruption) over the years," Van Gundy continued. "Look, I follow this stuff. If you're on guys' shows, they don't criticize you and if you won't go on their shows, they do (criticize you.) That stuff is never made known. There's a lack of integrity in the business. So whatever Mike wants to say, that's fine. He's certainly not an expert in my business and I'm not going to worry about it too much."
Well, that should about cover it. Any questions?
