Nice essay on the NBA draft by the well-known intellectual Stanley Fish:

. . . Even though the occasion was scripted and pious and amounted finally to little more than an extended (indeed interminable) choreographing of a non-event, it was compulsively watchable. Again, why? The best answer (my wife gave it) was that, on several levels, what we were witnessing was the repeated renewing of hope . . .

To Mr. Fish: No shit Sherlock...

As a Lions fan, I've discovered this "renewal of hope" year after year after year after year after year...after year...

I'm also a Lions fan, so I know exactly how you feel. It's been so bad for SO MANY YEARS that it feels like one of those horrible dreams you keep having, night after night . . .

I think we should invent the NBA Draft drinking game.

You have to drink every time Jay Bilas says a guy has great length, has a good motor or has off the charts physical ability.

You have to take a shot every time Dicky V pimps the college game.

I predict many people would be absolutely shit-faced by the end of the lottery.

I only watched it to hear the word "Pullupability" - which, quite frankly, you can only hear during the draft.

Well, that's a lie. I also watched to see when the forum will have a collective melt-down when all the arm-chair experts were upset that their world renowned scouting acumen was ignored by KP and his merry band of man.

KP and his merry band of men could be worrying about how much to re-sign our starting PG Ramon Sessions right now, but decided that Taurean Green was the better choice.

They are not infallible. It's funny to me that you think they are, and that they are beyond question.

Yes, and I remember the BBF going into a melt-down when this happened - not. I do remember the BBF going into a melt-down when we took the Roy/Aldridge scrubes instead of the 'Stache and Rudy Gay hall of famers. It goes both ways, you know.

It is reasonable to expect them to make some mistakes with the late picks of the 2nd round - but it is not a reason to go into the kind of epic jumping off bridges we often see here. I have to admit, however, that it is fun to read it.

Sweet! Nobody can question the loyalty of a Lions fan! Maybe our sanity, but never our loyalty.

Hope has been renewed yet again. Millen is gone and Stafford is the real deal. Our LB corps is finally looking good too. We've got some holes here and there, but on paper we already look way better. Schwartz is a major upgrade from Moronelli, so the battle won't be lost before we step on the field anymore.

Two shots every time that college player is from either (A) the Big East, or (B) Duke or UNC. I found it odd that he was whining about underclassmen being drafted, and how DeJuan Blair and Sam Young should have been "rewarded" with first round picks. Um, Dick, Blair was an underclassman.

I'm a Raider fan. I offer that any future success to witness as a fan is even more bleak than that of a Lion fan.
