The first one was great. After that, in my opinion, it was all downhill.

Here's the problem, as I see it:

This trilogy crapped all over a lot of the lore and canon that George Lucas had worked really hard to build. JJ Abrams even admitted that he doesn't really like or care about Star Trek or Star Wars. So while the films might not be bad in the sense that you want to walk out of the theater, they're bad in that they change the rules for the Star Wars universe. That upsets people. Star Wars is a massive expanded universe that people love. That's why the franchise has been so successful for so long.

Example - taking a space cruiser and suicide it into a fleet at hyper speed. This pissed people off because if this was really a thing, why didn't the Rebels just yolo an empty cruiser into the Death Star?

So while I personally enjoyed Solo, for example, I pretty much just suspended disbelief that he wasn't actually Han Solo but another character entirely because I thought it was ridiculous that they were having anyone other than Harrison Ford playing Han Solo. The movie itself was fine and I enjoyed it, but that fact always bugged me.

But I think another good example is Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings. You could tell he loved Lord of the Rings with how much work and passion he put into the trilogy. That's why it was so good, that's why it won awards, and that's why he was a great person to put in charge of that franchise. But then he had to take over the Hobbit series because of issues with directors and you could tell his heart wasn't in it. There was no passion. That's why the Hobbit series was not even remotely as good as the LotR films.

We didn't get LotR Peter Jackson. We got Hobbit Peter Jackson.

Really? The franchise has had only two really good movies and the rest are "good". (Empire and ANH).
 
Saw this over the weekend. Liked it for the most part but the ending didn't really feel right in a few ways.
 
I haven't read any posts in that thread but just got back from seeing Star Wars and it was FUCKING AWESOME!

I know the critics hated it and now I'm going to go back and read this thread to see how many of you did.

Don't care, I think it was great. Can't wait to watch it again. So many fun and loving tributes, Easter eggs, and homages to all the movies.

I didn't like the direction of 7 and 8, especially in terms of all the main characters from 4, 5, and 6 (Han & Leia not together, Han being a smuggler again, Luke being a hermit, etc.) but since they couldn't be changed at this point I think they did a good job of "fixing" it with 9. Even if a lot of it seemed rushed I liked it as well.
