You're not going to be super optimistic and say EWill and Leonard start?

I would love to see E Will come out and earn a starting spot, but I doubt it's gonna happen. Hickson is a rebounding machine; which I think is more important (Aldridge not being much of a rebounder). I think we need the Matthews D moreso than the explosive and offensive minded E Will. But if those two can come out and produce at a level that warrants a start, then we are in damn good shape. Having Matthews and Hickson as key reserves will be a huge blessing.

Batum is my favorite blazer, so I really want to believe he'll take the next step. However, I just can't get the fact that in the playoffs the Suns put their worst defender (Steve Nash) on Batum, and Batum did squat, and it really hurt the team. The next time he drives left and does a step back will be his first.

To be fair that was two years ago and he was playing with an injured shoulder. And his entire mission was to try to contain Nash. But on the other hand, in his 18 playoff games he has a PER of 10.2.

There are reasons he hasn't been handed the keys. But he's grown a lot, healthy, and taking a leadership role for France. Maybe it's time to give it a try.

Good, I do feel a little better now.

Shit.

Damn.

Makes sense, we'll see what happens.

Mook, seriously what the hell kind of therapist are you? Make me feel better only to bring me down! You should stay out of the therapy business. OTOH, you should try out for the part Vizzinni when Princess Bride comes to you local theater :)

lol. Yeah, I try to cover all sides of an argument, wait for the other person to decide, and then tell them they are wrong. My wife finds it adorable.

this would be rad, if lma can be talked into being a "center"

and let nic try to AI it up, maybe there is a killer scorer waiting to emerge, but hes still got to guard the other teams best wing

great players will play great both ways

Sure, if you think jobs are defined by height. Batum is taller and lankier, so he's the 3.

But if you think jobs are defined by natural inclination, talent, and pay scale, Batum makes more sense at SG. Batum has the talent to be a pretty effective offensive player, taking guys off the dribble more, taking midrange jumpers, using his passing skills. But he needs the ball in his hands to do that. Next year he's going to be paid like a key member of the offense, so we might as well use him that way.

Matthews, in contrast, really doesn't have any driving or passing ability. He's a much better candidate to be "that corner guy." And given his past, he probably feels lucky just to be in the NBA. So being a defensive role player is probably not a big deal for him.

Batum (20%) and Matthews (18%) had similar usage rates last season. They both took about 11 shots per game (although Batum hit at 45% while Wes hit at 41%). They were used kind of interchangeably. I think if Batum were posting here, he'd say, "Look, this has to change. Wes is a nice guy and a hard worker. But he doesn't have my tools, he isn't being paid my kind of money, he's two years older and nobody talk about 'upside' anymore when you talk about Wes. It's time to tip the balance in the offensive sets so I get more shots and more possessions. I get a little more of the Brandon Roy Awesome Shooting Guard treatment, and Wes gets a little more of the Role Playing SF Standing in the Corner treatment."

I suppose you could throw out the whole "SG/SF" thing, since in the real world lots of SF's play the "featured offensive player" role. But when I hear Batum say he wants to play SG, I interpret that as him saying he grew up on the Blazers playing next to Brandon Roy, and he thinks he can be more of that guy.

Their jobs are defined by who they guard.

Batum hasn't proven he's a much better creater or passer than Matthews. I have no idea where you guys are getting that.

Assists per game: Matthews 1.7, Batum 1.4

Shots assisted: Matthews 64%, Batum 77%

Batum barely ever does anything for himself and even more rarely creates for anyone else. Obviously Matthews isn't great at it either, but he's better than Batum.

The starting linup will be lillard, batum,Wes,lma, hickson in whatever way you want to order them.
This year we really have to feature batum in a ball handeling roll more then he has been in the past. For anyone who thinks batums ball handeling isn't very good needs to watch him on the French team, he handles the ball a lot and he doesn't have bad hands. I'm not sure why he hasn't really taken advantage of it in the NBA but he can be a point forward much in the way pierce is. It is going to take a bit to get him adjusted to it in the NBA though.

I've seen enough of Batum's ball handling in the NBA to know that he is not good at it.

this

if hickson is starting at center, we are playing some serious small ball

It's like when Dante Cunningham started at center a couple years ago. We actually had a pretty good record with LMA at "please call me a PF". I always said to just have Mark Mason announce both Dante and LA at Power Forward. Do the same with him and Hickson. Whatever floats LA's boat.

Rice wants to play

Mike Rice ‏@mikerice6
"@blazerscam4: @mikerice6 current starting 5 for PDX?" L.a. batum wes lillard freeland. Still early

Did any of our posters call that one?

e:craighelo was the only one definitive.

I did not call it but I said it would not surprise me if that was the starting line-up based on Freeland's experience over Leonard's. Like Mike said, it is early.
