Ok, this can be a sensitive subject to some so let's be mature about this.

How do you guys feel about the age of consent law? Is it really wrong for an 18 year old to have sex with a 17 year old, if they both consent?

Personally, I think the age of consent should be lowered to at least 16. If people decide to have sex, a law won't stop them, but possibly facing jail time for that is ridiculous.

Feelings?
 
The age of consent over here is 16 I do believe.

As you said, if 2 people choose to have consensual sex, then whats the problem? You cant call that a form of rape. It's absurd.

The law's meant to protect underaged children whose brains have not fully developed yet from being seduced and lured into relationships with older men/women that they think are consensual but in reality are actually very predatorial.
 
Over here, the minimal age is 15, but the other person must be under 18 (or was it at most 18?).

Voodoo, I understand that. But what is the big age difference between 18 and 17? Are the brains that much different? I can understand if the law was 16...but 18?
 
It's 16 in Washington, and rightfully so. Just need the drinking age to be lowered to 19 here too. But yea, 18 and 17 is fine.

But then what is the difference between 17 and 16, 16 and 15, and so forth.

Yes, 16 but there has to be a maximum 2 or 3 year difference in age.

Then 18 you can do whoever you want.

It's an interesting topic. I'm sure everyone's answer is going to be determined by how it would effect them. If you're 18 and you have a 17 year old girlfriend, I'm sure you'd be against it. However, if you put yourself in the position of being the father of the girl, then you'd probably want the law enforced.
 
My view will probably change when I'm a father, but I feel that when you're 17 you're able to decide if you want to consent with someone. If my daughter wants to be sexually active when she's 16 or 17, I'll understand because I was. As long as she confronts her mother and I about it, gets on the pill, etc.

Famous last words. No matter how bad we don't want to turn into our parents, we tend to become like them as we get older. I think that's cool if you have that type of open relationship with your daughter when you get to that point, but most kids and parents don't feel comfortable talking about sex at a young age.

For me it would really depend on how mature and responsible I felt my daughter and her boyfriend were.
 
I was thinking the same thing as shape.

Mamba, are you open with your parents about your sex life? If you are then that's great that you can talk with your parents about that. As a teenager, I know that I don't tell my parents much and I doubt your daughter would feel comfortable telling you she's sexually active.

I also find it hard to believe that you'd be that cool about it when you're an actual parent. After raising your daughter for 16 years, it's going to be a lot more difficult than it seems to just let her start having sex.
 
From personal experience, i was 16 and my GF just turned 18 and so we did it anyways. My mom loves her, so s'all good for me (at that time, i'm turning 18 this April). However, the whole "brains are not fully developed enforcing them to make the wrong decision and being used" arguement really isn't that great. If i were 18 and she were 17, what makes it so wrong? When i was 17 it was ok, but then it's magically considered rape right when i turn 18? the hell.
 
I'm open with my father when he talks to me about it, and sometimes with my mother. It's not really her job, lol.

As for my gf, she talked with her parents and they both consented to put her on the pill.
 
what if two kids were going out since they were like 14 and 13 and one of them turns 18 and 17 and they have been sexually active since like 15 why would just beucase one of them turn 18 its suddenly wrong wen it was fine for the last 3-4 years
 
I'm not sure what the legal consent age is in California, probably 18. I don't know much about it but it would make sense to have a rule, something like if a person is within 3 years of the other persons age its ok, i.e. if someone is 15 they can legally have sex with an 18 year old, or a 17 y/o with a 20 y/o, etc.

That seems so crazy to me. My parents don't know anything about my life outside of the house, which is the way I like it. I know a lot of girls and even several guys who are open with their parents about their sexual lives and whatnot but I could/would never do that. I'd just feel awkward with my parents in my business like that because they aren't the types to just allow stuff like that to happen.

I can't stand girls whose mothers are "their best friend", its just so weird to be at the girls house knowing that the mother knows everything about you and her daughters' relationship. Also a lot of times the mothers are manipulative and just a bad influence on their daughter as well; often times they'll try too hard to be the daughter's friend when they should be mothering the kid. They're also really clingy and always want to go out with the daughter and disrupt everything...anyway I'm just ranting now but its kind of on the same subject.
 
Exactly. I agree 100% with Run BJM. I knew a girl like that who told her mother everything and it really pissed me off. Whenever we got into a fight or something happened, she would go to her mom. Of course she'd be worked up and the story she told her mom would be exaggerated and one sided so I usually looked like an ass in the end. Then whenever I'd see the mom, I was never sure what was going through her head and I'm pretty sure she judged me and didn't like me before she even got the chance to know me.

And I'm the same way with my parents. Like I'll tell my parents if I'm dating a girl or whatever but what we do is between us. I couldn't sit down with my dad and tell him what I did last night without feeling extremely uncomfortable. I don't want my parents knowing stuff like that. I mean, if they asked me I'd be honest with them but they would never ask me something like that. It's kind of a subject that we both try to avoid and it gets pushed aside. I'm glad though because I can't imagine how weird or awkward it would be.

My mom is like that, that's why I confronted my dad about it. Lol, my mom was snooping in my room and found condoms one day and freaked. My dad's cool like that because he was mr. popular in hs (star RB), so yeah...

EXACTLY. My girl and I went to a movie tonight and it got out at like 12:10 AM, so she calls and asks if she was sleeping...and her mom goes...Do you want me to go to sleep *laughs*

Swish, I'll answer if they ask, LOL. They don't ask how many times I made her orgasm or what not. Don't worry, lol. It's not some hardcore xxx discussion.
