Stauskas?

I'd be interested to see how many options Stauskas had left...i.e., if he would've signed a 2yr vet min, or (since we seem to be breaking up our MLE with Curry) taking a 3yr barely-over-minimum out of the MLE account with a couple of non-guaranteed years.

There's a chance, assuming he maintains his shooting skill, that he follows the career path of Korver and Redick. I invite you to take a look at their first 6 or so years in the league.

Never once were they as bad as Stauskas. Stauskas shouldn't even be in the league.

Maybe you weren't watching a ton of ORL Redick, but the dude barely got off the bench in his first 3 years and didn't do much when he did.

Redick still wasn't awful inside the arc, and was more productive than Stauskas offensively. Redick was just a much more talented player that didn't have consistent minutes to produce. Stauskas just has no talent. He's below-average to horrible in every area of the game except 3pt shooting.

True. but that was more due to his defensive effort. Than anything else.

Anyone who doesn't think this is a horrible signing, find another area (other than 3pt shooting) where Stauskas isn't bad, and a stat to back it up.

It's not that I don't think it's a horrible signing.
It's that I think he's better than Jake Layman & the Baseball player.

Through age 24 season...

You think spending a vet min contract on a former lotto pick with a skillset (and frankly, athletic type) that has a history of taking a while to develop, but has staying power, to be the 15th man on the bench until he proves something is horrible? Again, we kept Luis Montero on the roster for a year. We've given Sasha Pavlovic and Victor Claver and Jake Layman run. Horrible?

Now, should that have been the "midnight Day 1" move? Nope. Does it suck that that's our 2nd-best upgrade in FA, behind a guy who was injured all last year? Yup. Do I think Olshey sux? Yup. Do I think a vet-min signing rates a horrible grade? Nope.

You're right - not horrible. But also not very promising.

In looking at the advanced stats - Korver, Redick, & Stauskas are very similar except in 2 very important areas.
1) Stauskas' TS% is significantly lower.
2) Stauskas' WS/48, BMP, VORP, & ORTG-DRTG are all significantly lower. This is likely due to the defensive end of the game... apparently he just isn't the lock down defender that Redick or Korver are.

Just because Layman, Claver, & Montero were on a roster doesn't mean that they every should have been.

How many Centers did Miami give a roster spot to before they signed Whiteside?

Those were precisely the things I was going to post about. Thanks for saving me the time.

Our backup guards next year (if there are no other changes) are Baldwin and Curry.
Simons and Trent are the future.

So, Stauskas is, imho, a practice player - a Pat improvement. Puzzling signing, really.

OK, it's only 1 year 1.6 mil deal, so no big deal.

Should we sign Anthony Bennet?

I think Layman is better than Stauskas TBH. We shouldn't have had Montero or Claver one the roster. Give me a Royce O'Neal/Torrey Craig type. Minimum contracts can be useful, if used on the right guys. Suckskas is not the right guy.

Time to bury this thread until the dude proves something.

As Olshey's big summer acquisition, Stauskas is our LeBron James. Nik is to the Blazers as LeBron is to the Lakers. So everyone should bow down to Nik "LeBron" Stauskas.

Nik "LeBron" Stauskas was an 8th pick and is no chopped steak. This guy can do it all. After economics forces Olshey to trade McCollum, Lillard will have options--Curry, LeBron, and Layman. Olshey is batting 2 for 3 this summer, which may indicate he thinks this is a baseball team.

He's so bad defensively nothing else makes up for it. -4.0 BPM last year... Quit putting lipstick on a pig, he's not a good player.
While I'm not particularly optimistic, I'm going to wait and see. He was drafted fairly high.

Which blazers team did you watch last year?

Trent is 19 years old. If he proves better, great. But to count on that from day one is foolish. Not even sure Stauskas is that guy either. We’ll see what other moves they make.
Trent's father was a bad egg. His character was not good.

I lust for a little SF dribbler, so I like Steakhouse. He will excel in the Stotts system.

He and Turner fill the same niche. One will play and the other will sit. The job is Sausage's for the taking, if he makes shots.

Neil Olshey's big get this off-season.
I know it’s kind of stupid so feel free to reaffirm that for me, but it’s not the fact they signed Stauskus, it’s the timing of it that just makes roll my eyes a little. It was a few hours into FA when it was announced. Which means they targeted him...
