That was extremely dumb on his part. Guess he wasn't paying attention to Cally get dealt. Zucc on his way to getting dealt before he set his agent straight.
 
He's also never hit 60 points. There are a ton of guys who have who don't make more than 6 million. Wheeler has done it 3 times and makes 5.8. Couture has done it twice and makes 6 million. Pavelski makes 6 million. You could go on and on. That's what happens when your agent is a moron and tells you how great you are. Carter has done it 4 times and makes 5.2 Eberle has done it 3 times and makes 6.
 
I don't agree with that dump. He was always going to file, they all do, that is his leverage. If he didn't file the Rangers could have totally lowballed him. So I don't hold that against him at all, that was exactly what we all knew he would do.

The bigger issue is where does he go from here. Mostly everyone files, but it is very rare it gets to the actual hearing, I think Zherdev was the last Ranger in 2009 and we walked from that one if I recall correctly.

I am hopefully Stepan wants to be Ranger, wants to win, and also wants to be paid very fairly. With that said I still believe an AAV of around 6 mill +/- long term works for everyone involved.

He's a 4m talent who will probably get 5.5. They should deal him next year for picks/prospects and use that savings towards Staal who will be making more but is a clear upgrade.
 
He is more than a 4 mill talent IMO. Look at the list dump provided, and Step is close to in line with most of those guys making 6 mill +/-. To me that is fair. To me that was going to be his AAV (think 5.7 to 6.2).

BUT after the ROR deal we'll see if it changes at all. I hope not and I hope everyone realizes that was a total one off way over the top contract given out by a team that is starting from the bottom and trying to work their way up.

I'm all for hockey and football players getting every penny with the punishment they take. However, you gotta be realistic. You have never hit 60 points once and I'm guessing he's asking for 6.5 to 7 million. If that is the case, NO!. Simple as that.
 
That's fair he is a 5m or so player based on his numbers compared to the others. I personally think Brassard is the better player and would be the one i'd keep.
 
I disagree with that. To me he is a 6 mill +/- AAV player (I was kind of thinking a 5.7 or 5.8 mill cap hit). I have thought that from the start, and still believe that. We'll see how it shakes out after the ridiculous ROR contract.
 
I don't think it's worth getting upset about this. I think the Rangers will offer a fair deal and unless it a terrible low ball I don't think it will get to arbitration.
 
Exactly, that's the bottom line. He 100% was going to file, and rightfully so. What "happened" today means zero to me because he was always going to file, so nothing has changed IMO.
 
I didn't either. LOL. Zipay thinks Stepan is a goner now. What else is new. A Rangers player asking for money he isn't worth.
 
My only concern is if it goes to arbitration and Stepan wants to push this the arbitrator will give him O'Reilly money most likely. Buffalo set the precedent, obviously that contract was dumb but its a good comparison as they are similar players/ages.

Now the good news is Sather has a long history of how he reacts to this stuff by trading players so hopefully Stepan wants to play here and will take that in account.
 
The last part is really what it needs to come down to for Step to stay. I pretty much don't see any other way.

Stepan is obviously considerably better than Jordan Staal. However, Staal is a beast on draws. 56%. He has 17 points in his last 24 playoff games. He's also 6'4, 220 lbs. He would be one of the best 3rd line centers in the game. Can play 2nd center if Hayes struggles. Carrick is a good, physical, right handed defenseman prospect. That first round pick could be a lottery pick. Staal is overpaid at 6 million. However, throw in the rest of the deal and the fact you make them take Glass. I'd do that.

Yeah agree with Al - There is no way the rebuilding Canes are giving up a lottery pick for the opportunity to pay Stepan $7m a year

Eric Staal/Stepan trade could make sense for both teams though
 
First of all, Al has no clue if that pick will be a lottery pick. He's just assuming as always. Two, a rebuilding team would rebuild with a proven, 24 year old center. Stepan isn't 28 or 30. He's freakin 24. So his point was idiotic. Three, the Canes already have a very good, young center. Four, if Al did any research which he never does, he would see their farm is completely void of any center talent. It would be perfect to put him behind a 24 year old center when odds are there is no way they would bring E. Staal back who will be a UFA. Their draft pick this year was Hanifin, a defenseman. Not only do I think the Canes do that deal, I think it's 100% they do that deal. It's if the Rangers want to do that deal. They are the team taking a 6 million dollar center who doesn't score as much as he should in hopes the pick might be a lottery pick. As usual, Al completely over values every other teams players and rates our players as crap. Never changes.

by the way...you are the one who called Stepan an asshole...so how am I over valuing another team's player exactly?
 
Now, a team that isn't rebuilding at all any longer is Florida. You might be able to do Stepan for Barkov and Bolland. That might be possible if you are willing to take back Bolland's idiotic contract. That's a long shot but you never know.
 
I do not believe ROR's new contract can be used as a comparable at arbitration.

ROR's current 6M contract can be though.

ROR's contract structure might also cause a prob too if Steps agent tries the same thing (its almost 90 bonuses so it avoids escrow and buyouts).

Saads contract doesnt help either.

Step is getting 6M if we are lucky, 6.7-7.2 is prob more realistic, like it or not.

Someone is getting moved, could be a number of guys discussed here, but someone is def going.

Hope the loonie rebounds next year or the cap will really be a problem
 
Agree we will be lucky if he only gets $6m. I can see the Rangers offering $5.7m and him asking for $7m+. If he asks for $7m a year I see it way more likely he gets $7m then $5.7m
 
id see what Carolina would offer for Staal. I think out of the big 3 he would be the one I would give up and get max value for. I say that because I wont give up McD at any cost
 
Staal would be the guy I'd move also if possible, but he has a NMC so very doubtful.

If Stepan demands 7 mill he will be traded...that simple to me.

I dont disagree, but wouldnt be shocked if we gave him 7m. Wouldnt like it, but not sure who we get to to replace him for less.

Staal to CAR to clear room for Step and that top 6 forward we are missing makes some sense, maybe he would waive to go play with his brothers. Prob not, but not impossible...
