Steve Adams Calls Warriors Monkeys

The real problem here isn't what Steven Adams said, what he belives or what he meant to say. The real problem is it's 2016 and way too many people still look at someone and base their opinion on them on the color of their skin. That's not what Adams did here. He looks at Steph Curry and Klay Thompson and sees two very good basketball players that are smaller than him, faster than him and very difficult to guard based on their quickness, their constant motion and record setting shooting ability. It was not meant as an insult, or a slur.

Yeah, I'm putting words in his mouth, but if anyone thinks he meant it as a racial slur they need to save their indignation for more worthy targets.

Gee, I can think of one off the top if my head, but I don't want to mention his name and get this thread moved to the OT section just yet, because it is basketball related.

It fucking kills me when people try to make shit more than what it is.

TRUE STORY- Blazers in Phoenix 2 seasons ago. Players out on the court shooting around about 5pm. Coach Vanterpool sit s next to me and we start talking about how the game will go later that night. Im talking about how the Morris twins react on pick n roll situations and I use the term, "Morris Boys"........ as I say this, that ass hat Jabari Young from CSN walks by, stops, looks at me and with the dirtiest tone and face says, "YOU aren't allowed to say that!" I say, "Say what?" He says, "YOUR people aren't allowed to say the word boys!"

Let me tell you that The HCP was heated! It took all my strength not to call him out big time on that. Just another fool in this world trying to stir up shit!

Why not? He ain't shit! You shoulda punked that asshat!

@HCP "MF I WENT TO GRANT!!"

FUCK Jabari...

I'm so happy that racist idiot is gone. Brought nothing to the table. Fucking nothing.

Steven Adams is at least half Maori. I can guarantee you he knows what discrimination is. And I can almost as certainly guarantee you he meant absolutely nothing by his comments. If he had called them "quick little bastards", would he have been roasted by that segment of society whose mothers never married their fathers??? It's a freakin' expression and nothing more. What a crock of horseshit. Move on folks, nothing to see here.....

nope, 0% Maori

but is half Tongan. His dad (i think) was English.

regardless, the fact that he had to retract it due to people over there thinking it can be taken as a racial slur is just fuckin pathetic.

is that really where we are at lol?

although, I can see the media running it for days non stop if Trump etc said it about any group of people with even the slightest hint of race being an element.

Ah, give the guy a break. He probably never heard of Howard Cosell.

My apologies, I am still assimilating to the S2 culture

Well...... let's not pretend like the word "monkey" hasn't been used as a racist slur. Adams knew it too, or he wouldn't have immediately apologized. No, that's not how he meant it, but it's still a word that can carry a racial meaning.

definitely more of a US audience thing than what he is familiar with growing up here. most of my friends call their kids cheeky monkeys etc - aint nobody pretending the racial monkey analogy thing isnt a thing, it is, for you guys.

one of our broadcasters here years ago called koffi annan a 'cheeky darkie' - that was pretty lol.

considering yall are adding a 3rd toilet for gender confused people, it aint too much of a shock this hits as news as well - if you can take anything, twist it, make it PC and emo, itll happen.

I have a biography of Roger Maris written in the early 60's by a well known sprotswriter of the times. He repeatedly calls Maris and Mays "good little monkeys" in the book. It is a reference to their agility and energy, and nothing racial in any sense.

Nvm. @Natebishop3. Handled it.

I can accept that Steve Adams, coming from a different culture, was unaware of the racial connotations. I can accept that he did not intend offense. I can accept that he apologized. I can accept that the players can say no hard feelings.

That SHOULD end the discussion and would have had we not had a row of white dudes saying "that's not racist".
Dudes, it is not your call.

The term absolutely does have a racial history.
It is not accidental that right wing web sites repeatedly caricaturize President Obama as a banana eating monkey. Caricaturing opponents is older than the United States of America, but this particular caricature has a specific meaning and a racial history. It's silly to pretend otherwise. Or to say "I'm white and I was called a little monkey by grandpa so it's not racist when African-Americans are called monkeys or apes".

You make a lot of really good points, but I'm old and was called a little monkey when growing up. I used to call my youngest son one because he climbs all over the place. Now that I have black children living with me I don't do that anymore. What sucks is that I don't do it because of the racial undertones, but I meant nothing by it when I said it.

It's almost to the point where I'd be afraid to say the word monkey at the zoo because someone would take it the wrong way

Is it because the country is too PC?

Craig Ferguson on his late show always called the audience....you cheeky little monkeys...I used to refer to my son climbing all over the furniture as a little monkey...now if you really wanted to piss off humanity, you'd call us sponges ...our true ancestors

animal comparisons used for humans
runs like a deer, flies like and eagle, is a real packrat, howls at the moon, flies like an eagle, eats like a pig, acts like he's your puppy dog, has a memory like an elephant, floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee, chatters like a monkey, strong as an ox, smells like a skunk, slept like a bear....if you're offended by any of these things you'd better stay away from the children's section of the library

You forgot climbs like a cat.

The problem is this specific comparison in this specific circumstance. Which I think you know.

BTW did you know oxen are castrated? So not sure if you really want to be compared to one.

Adams comment is outrageous! There is no place for this. And I'm equally outraged that the Warriors haven't said anything about this. The only fair and logical thing to do is to ban both teams from the rest of the playoffs and name the Blazers Western Conference Champions.

Now that's just talking like a weasel

The Warriors use a name for their team that offends many American Indians. I am offended that I am called "white" and not referred to as a Native American. Crandc is offended by pretty much any words spoken by heterosexual caucasian males.

No one wants to comment on the fact that he obviously does not think much of them intellectually or he would have referred to them as apes?
