Portland Guard to Enter Sixth Season with Organization

Posted: Jun 19, 2015

Portland Trail Blazers guard Steve Blake has exercised his player option for the 2015-16 season, it was announced today by President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey.

Blake (6-3, 172) appeared in 81 games for the Trail Blazers last season. In 350 games (232 starts) over five seasons with Portland, Blake holds averages of 7.8 points (41.4% FG, 39.8% 3-PT, 78.2% FT), 2.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists.

For his career, Blake has averages of 6.7 points (40.1% FG, 38.5% 3-PT, 77.8% FT), 2.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists over 12 seasons with Washington, Portland, Milwaukee, Denver, L.A. Clippers, L.A. Lakers and Golden State.

Blake, 34, played four years at the University of Maryland, where he won an NCAA Championship in 2002, and was selected by the Washington Wizards with the ninth pick in the second round (38th overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft.

Man this guy is a 3rd stringer at best. I hope Blazers address the backup pg because Steve Blake is not that answer

I miss Mo Williams. 17 and 6 in only 30min he averaged for Charlotte this year.. *sighs*

I'm not surprised to see Blake opt in. He wants to retire here and this may be his last season. Decent 3rd string pt guard when you need him.

Ok, now that our offseason moves are finalized, time to talk about training camp!

Fuck Mo Williams.

Blake will be fine for a 3rd string and limited 2nd. Obviously he got tired later in the year last year, and his athleticism is leaving him quickly. We just need to get a serviceable 2nd stringer like Sergio? /kappa ;)

Nothing to worry about. When Aldridge and Matthews leave in sign-and-trades, we can fill out our bench with whoever we get for them.

I think the headlines are misleading. The information is that he opted in, but the headline says he'll be with us next season. These things are not the same.

And potential future assistant?

I have not seen any firm statements that are public, but It sure seems like Steve likes the Blazers and has mad respect for us. I see this as a good sign if he and Afflalo opt in. Not because I think they are a key to our future, but it shows free agents that others like it here and want to remain. It might open a crack at trying to find a legit all star to come here.
It's no secret around the league that Portland staff and front office is one of the better ones in the league, but when players opt in ( I know, what else is Blake gonna do?) I think it cements that knowledge of the respect our front office has from the players. This has GOT to mean a little something to players thinking about coming here right? ESPECIALLY IF LMA resigns? I know it would make me raise my eyebrows if I was looking for a good team to call home that was trying to contend. fuck the rain, I want respect and to win!!!

I'd rather see the bottom 2 roster spots with older vets as insurance than with young talented guys that need experience.

He likes it here. He loves the organization. He loves us on the court and off the court. Let him finish his career here. Doesn't mean you give him significant playing time.

But I support him retiring as a Blazer. I wish some of these other player would fall for the town and team the way this kat has.

Yeah the sentimental softie in me wants to see this happen too. I also want us to get Channing Frye back before he retires, for the same reason. Keep all the goofy weirdos in our orbit.

You think we will trade him for the 3rd time? My guess is Neil gave him a verbal assurance he would not do that to his family again. Needing his small contract for a trade does not seem likely either. We need 3 pG's .

He's like a loyal puppy dog. He's been traded a couple of times but that hasn't stopped him considering our offers when we needed him. He has forgiven and forgot. He likes it here and wants to be here...soooooo.... let him hang em up here. He's our very own and a Blazer for life.
