Street youths and foodcart operators brawl in downtown Portland

Mackenzie Manzurkiewicz, a self-described street youth, said that some of the cart operators swore at some of the youths and provoked a fight.

"At one point they started mean mugging us," she said. "They told us to come over and confront them."
Those mean mugging mother fuckers!

Given the city's demographics, is it safe to assume the "street youths" are of the trustafarian variety?

No. Homeless street kids. Been around in Portland forever.

Oregon Live doesn't know that youths is a code word?

I once saw two hot dog vendors fight over a patch of sidewalk in front of Maple Leaf Gardens.

Very "weird" Portland. Congrats

were they youths, or yutes?

generally it is, but in Portland the street "youths" are white when its downtown....if it were elsewhere, than the usual usage of "youths" would apply.

Hmmm....I'm trying to find the seeming humor here. Are you laughing at anyone in particular, or the situation as a whole?

It's fucking hilarious! Too many laughs to list but I'll give it a try.

25yr old homeless people are street youths?

You ever been to any of the cart pods? Cash only! You think they pay their fair share of taxes? Fuck no! But here they are complaining that they don't get enough police protection.

The "Homeless Advocate" was one of the leaders of Occupy Portland. So when you get too old to call yourself a street youth you can promote yourself as a Homeless Advocate.

Have you been to downtown Portland lately? Here's a little fun fact that barely made the news. A pitbull rescue group had too many dogs so they offered free adoptions to anyone. Over 3 months 16 dogs were given to homeless people. Homeless people with malnourished pitbulls begging on the streets of downtown Portland?!? Portland's answer? A grant from the city of Portland to a pet food bank so they can deliver dog food to homeless camps.

Another fun fact. Homeless people can stand, sit, cuss and/or beg on any street in downtown Portland as long as they are 6ft away from the entrance of a business.

So yeah, when two different groups of people who contribute little to nothing to this great city beat each other up I find it rather funny.

homeless street kids versus persian food cart owners! :MARIS61:

hey, at least the homeless don't shit in the streets downtown.

Easy to laugh at, I suppose. Frankly, I find it a bit sad....and an indication of poor community leadership. Hopefully, steps can be taken to help mitigate these kinds of incidences in the future.

Ahh, well, keeping Portland weird, eh? ;)

We have excellent community leadership! If you're a bicycle rider or love billion dollar streetcars Portland is great!

Imagine this + panhandling + talking shit if you don't give them money = Portland streetkid

You have been watching way too much Ellen. Time to turn off the TV and get the testosterone flowing. Next thing I know, you are going to start bitching about cigar smoke.

In certain areas, sure. General priorities, fer sure. I, too, love Portland...and plan to live here until I retire in Bend in a few years.

Oh, and don't get me started about the bicyclists vs. automobile drivers debate. I'm a bicycle/running enthusiast myself, but some of those bicyclists (and automobile drivers, as well) don't have a clue about common respect!

Bite me.

Remember when we were walking in downtown Portland and that homesless yoots couple were talking shit to the woman with a fur coat? Basically I think any loser type walking the streets because they actually preffer to be losers are laughable.

Hey now, they weren't homeless people, they were Fur Advocates.

Remember the homeless dude I gave $5 to tell us where the best strip clubs in downtown were at? That actually worked pretty good, lol,

Unless they light up a smoke. Then it's 10 feet.

Oh, and you forgot to mention the tram. It's the first tourist attraction non-locals ask about.

 at that kid bending over to blow his bong smoke through a anti smell device of some sort

clearly in his moms basement

I think they should have a weekly "Battle Royal"; with a cash prize 10% of the door to the last yoots standing. Admission is $5.

I think HCP invited that guy to the last DnD fest he had in his basement. That guy was some jackhole "level 33 Paladin", but he totally didn't play Lawful Good. So embarrassing...it's like "dude, if you want to play Chaotic Evil find some halfling thief/Illusionist character to play. Sheesh."

Also, had the worst luck ever. He rolled us in to a spike trap and missed on the paralysis save. Dude just sucked all around.

There are probably some kids who choose the lifestyle, but the vast majority do not come from privileged backgrounds. Very troubled kids from what I've seen.

So, let me get this straight: The author of the article called them "youths," but the so-called "homeless advocate" called them "gutter punks?"
