There is a very big difference between public school and private schools. Is there a free medical school that I'm unaware of? I'd rather not have a doctor from that school if there is one.

Sorry you had it bad but my nieces, nephews, great niece, great nephew were learning calculus in high school as well as chemistry more advanced than I had and I learned the shell structures when I was in high school.

You should try an urban or suburban school and get out of those rural schools.

Every kid is supposed to go to k-12. Not every kid goes to college, let alone medical school. A better argument would be whether or not you care if if the guy checking you out at Costco got his high school diploma from a brick and mortar school, or from online?

All medical schools have free scholarships for those who show great promise.

My great niece is attending Emory in Atlanta, right where the Center for Disease Control, CDC, is located, on a scholarship. She plans to do medical research, she already interned for a company doing that right here in Portland.

In Asia, which you brought up in another post, video games are much much bigger than any other sport. Their superstars are gamers. In South Korea their kids learn how to play video games instead of football or baseball or soccer. Esports is huge in those countries.

They might be alive, but they certainly are not "well." As El Pres said, we're getting our butt kicked by most of Europe and Asia. Our students are vastly behind kids of the same age in other countries.

Example - my wife works with people from The Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Her previous manager was working over here temporarily on loan from their Czech office. His kid had to go back home during the summer to keep up with his classmates because our schools are so far behind the Czech schools.

The inherent problem is that our schools teach to improve standardized test scores and not to actually educate people.

That's nothing compared to the academic load those kids take on....they go to cram schools because most of them have a quota based college entrance exam test that they stress about all through childhood...not every kid over there gets to go to college....they don't stress sports in schools because they are buried in books...I have first hand experience teaching over there....my son got a great start in math by 3rd grade..he also learned abacus by tutor...he was way beyond the 4th grade students in Portland when we moved back here...earned a full engineering scholarship to OSU with his own hard work....played basketball and soccer here in the states but not before his homework was done...can't say that about a lot of his teammates though. You ever work or raise a kid in both cultures? I have......I stand by my observations..in my case they are demonstrable

Considering the entire thread was about adding bullet proof walls to classrooms to protect children, I fail to see how medical school comes into play.

If we're talking about adding security measures to schools to protect our kids (who some of you were keen to insist are our future) then why would we suddenly jump to adults in medical school who are in their 20s?

Seems to me that El Pres was talking about k-12 because that's actually in line with what the original topic was about, and it was you guys who decided to go off topic to try to prove a point

Our schools have made sports the biggest cash cow in education …..as to math...we haven't even converted to the metric system yet...I could go on...I understand why our math scores are low....parents do not invest outside the public school resources to make their kids competitive...they will spend for sports fees and equipment...why? American parents are entertainment obsessed as well except for a small portion of them

Many baseball stars all over asia come from the poorest regions ...Taiwan has 18 aboriginal tribes that produce the best athletes in the country...many go to Japan and Korea to play professional sports...those kids aren't generally the children of business families or urban culture usually from fishing or farming regions.

It's not just math. There has been a slow erosion of writing skills as well. I had a few classes in college where we would proofread another student's work, and it was honestly staggering. The number of kids who don't know the difference between their, there, and they're, or even the difference between loose and lose. That was over ten years ago. I can't even imagine how bad it is now.

Statistically, they are extremely rare when you factor how many schools there are in the country. Its not like you go to a random school on a random day and have a good chance of getting shot. Or even a chance at all. Its a statistical anomaly.

So typical of you. As long as it is statistical small that you or anyone you know might get shot in a school shooting it's a non issue then. Remember the other day you claimed if I met you I would like you? That statistically happening is smaller than .0001% which means you have a bigger chance of being shot at a school.

There are kids all over the world who have lost writing skills due to spellcheck.....even famous authors use editors and proofreader to clean up their books..hell our president spells message, massage.....

I successfully raised a son in Oregon...he graduated several years ago from OSU...I have grandchildren who go to school now in the US ...I retired from teaching 5 years ago....go ahead and disrespect that. Asian education puts a high value on the wisdom of the elders....more often than not those kids are raised by grandparents while their parents work several jobs to make money for....yeah...the kid's education
