I'm curious, what activities or accomplishments by white people do you think are going under-reported or not acknowledged at all that a white history month would help draw the public's attention to?

Steve Blake's contribution to the Blazers for one ;)

This is one of the most stupid, ignorant, and hypocritical fucking things I have ever heard.

If that really is one of the most stupid, ignorant and hypocritical fucking things you've ever heard than you've lived a very sheltered life. (and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that. all parents try to shelter their children from the harsh realities of the real world.) I'm not defending his statement, just giving you some needed perspective.

To be fair, his life has been a short one. And when you can finally start going to bars, you start hearing some really stupid crap.

I would say the exact same number as in black history month.

Can you give me an example of something that would be featured or highlighted in your white history month that's not traditionally covered in the normal study of history? What part or parts of white history do you feel are not recognized in history books?

this isn't really germane to the discussion, but I know that I took AP history two years in HS and never made it past 1945. Dunno if that's still the same.

Why the fuck do we, in America, need to honor or observe a mexican national holiday for anyway? Once again the stupidity of liberal logic rears its ugly head....

I hope that principal sent any kids home who dared to wear the american flag on March 17th, offending all those white irish people.....trying to incite violence....or on Canada's national holdiay, when the fuck is that again?

face paint and mexican colors are ok on May 5th, but red\white and blue or american flags...well that is just offensive...what a fucking joke...

and who gives a shit if they were making a "silent" statement....quite frankly, if you feel like someone else wearing a t-shirt of an american flag in thier own country is offensive...well, then maybe it is YOU that has the problem.....

I'm not offended by them wearing it.. I just find it sad (if true) that someone would do something for the purpose of angering people.

I look at people like John Dawson, James Hardy, Branch Rickey, Audie Murphy, Wally Schirra and even Percy Spencer. I'll bet most kids have no idea who any of those people are. I'll bet most adults don't know who they are either. They all had a great impact on the world today in some form or another though.

kind if like flaunting the colors\flag of your country in the face of other people, in another country?

last time I checked Mexico's national holiday has no relevance in America....other than an excuse to drink and eat mexican food...

:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

Actually Cinco De Mayo isn't a Mexican national holiday and it's primarily celebrated in the USA while being completely ignored in most of Mexico. It might help to know what you're talking about before going on such a rant next time.

I think it's sad that people are projecting onto these kids some sort of malice or ill-intent of which there is absolutely no evidence.

I don't think it's been mentioned, or if it matters but you do lose almost all your rights when you step on to school grounds.....

That's true. I wonder if the Mexican-American students would have been even more upset if someone would have worn a French flag on May 5th?

Tinker v. Des Moines (1969) disagrees with you in regard to freedom of speech.
"The Court ruled that this symbolic speech--"closely akin to pure speech"--could only be prohibited by school administrators if they could show that it would cause a substantial disruption of the school's educational mission. "

I'm going to be cynical here, and make the assumption a lot of the kids under 18 don't realize the purpose of Cinco De Mayo. Maybe even suggest that the new purpose of Cinco De Mayo, much like St Patrick's day is now to celebrate culture. Does anyone really give a fuck about driving snakes out of Ireland? No it is about being Irish (which also means a drunkard). Further more, I think it would be a good idea for people to have more holidays like this, eg. Chinese New Year. Would it be racist to suggest a African heritage holiday that is not Kwanzaa?

well, Asian-Pacific Islander month is in there. Women's history month is in there. Some others, I'm sure.

Is it really that far of a leap to think that a kid who choose to wear a shirt with American flags to school in San Jose on cinco de mayo would know that it would create tension at school.

And the old saying the apple doesn't fall far from the tree . . . I love the parent's response. They don't go to school administration and talk it out, they decide to call the media and put their kid out their as some victim. Great way for a parent to handle the situation . . . fuck the school take it to the media.

(Call me old fashion, but if it had been my kid kicked out of school by admistration, I would slapped him upside his head and either call him an idiot for not realizing what he was doing or an idiot for realizing what he was doing . . . and then make him apologize to the school adminsitration)

I am going to admit that I exaggerated heavily. Sometimes it's hard to transition from talking to my dumbass friends and adults on a message board. So, I apologize for the exaggeration, but I still say it is stupid and hypocritical.

I think it is hypocritical because he talks about wanting freedom to wear American flag stuff, but thinks people who don't support the American government should "get the fuck out." What's worse is he says this is "above all else." Hmmm...

A few of those people aren't as unknown as you may think they are but I'm impressed with how well thought out your reply was. Now by having a white history month and bringing attention to the people you listed do you think that would help draw attention to and help improve recognition to the overall contributions of white people in American history? Do you feel that a white narrative is something that has been lacking in the writing and telling of American history?

Not that far of a leap, but a leap all the same. We assume we know what the kids' motives were, and we don't. That's arrogant.

Sorry--I missed the line in the article indicating that the parents took this to the media. Can you point that one out for me?

Well, call me an ultra-liberal, but I would support my child's right to express his/her patiotism in a respectful and responsible manner.
