Glad Kitzhaber has time for this latest job. The person who is elected to solely administrate schools is being replaced by a governor who needs to govern the entire state.

I'm sure we'll be #1 in the nation soon, with less of a focus on education, and more of a focus on its state-level funding.

SALEM – In the aftermath of the slew of education bills passed by the Legislature last week, one change is clear. Power over the public school system has become centralized in the governor's office like never before.

Not only will Gov. John Kitzhaber become the putative statewide school superintendent in the coming years -- the only governor in the country to hold that title -- he also will hold sway over a new superboard that oversees spending and policy for every grade level, from pre-kindergarten through graduate courses.

The shift in authority has some school advocates concerned that the governor will retain an outsized role in determining everything from how much money schools get to what students study and how they're tested. Kitzhaber says such concerns are unwarranted, and that the changes will make for a smoother, more coordinated approach to education in Oregon.

37 out of 138 Kindergarten teachers in Portland are making >$100k in salary and benefits.

It's freaking KINDERGARTEN.

No wonder these union hacks/freeloaders get so riled up when you asked them to pitch in with even a fraction of assistance to the general fund. It's a gravy train, and they don't work in the summer. What lazy freeloader would want to give up that sort of gig?

Well, it's just one of many things that are wrong... but yes, I'd say the government unions are definitely strangling us.

Looks fair to me. Most teachers are more educated than most lawyers or doctors or corporate execs.

Frankly, I don't see why anyone with self-esteem would work for any less.

If all workers had the stones to demand union representation, all workers would be paid fairly also.

Because most Americans are too cowardly to demand humane treatment from the ruling class, most will live out their lives as slaves.

How could they possibly have more education than a doctor or a lawyer, who have to go through a minimum of six to eight years of college? I could go get a bachelors in history and start teaching. That doesn't make me more educated, that just means I have a degree that can only be used for one thing.

Oregon State Superintendent is not the same thing as the Superintendent for Portland Public Schools (or any of the other superintendents of the individual school districts in the Portland area, such as David Douglas, Reynolds or Parkrose)

To teach, you need a masters. You could start teaching in college if you had a masters, but not in a public school.

I went to school with someone who didn't have a PHD and taught in college. It depends on what your title is too.

The people you know who don't have a masters, but are teaching K-12 are either grandfathered in (and of course that only happens in education) or are on their way to obtaining their masters (if they wish to keep their jobs).
