So, this country is pretty screwed. What are ways to profit and/or survive.

Banks may fail.
Credit will be non-existant.
We'll all be chinese in no time.

What is your all-purpose contigency plan?

I am a old guy. And my health isn't that great anyway.

Screw it. I'll just sell everything, move to Brazil. Piss away everything I've saved and then kill myself with drugs and alcohol and whores.

Nah, we're fine. Creative destruction in a capitalist system is like fire going through a forest. In the short term everything gets scorched. In the long term, the dead wood is burned away and the ground is fertilized with the ashes.

My hope is that the proper lessons are learned. So far, I'm not hopeful hearing both Obama's and McCain's comments on the issues at hand.

that's a good idea. Brazil is a rapidly developing nation right now! Live cheapy...move to mexico and live off the land!

how low can we go though? people's savings, investments and what not are all going to be wiped. with government backing failing companies left and right, there goes the entire economy when the companies eventually fail. These moves were just placeholders for the election IMO.

The OCC, Fed and OTS will likely be running a lot of Financial Institutions, but there won't be significant bank failures in terms of them completing shutting down.

I'm looking forward to the recreation of the RTC and the next wave of profiteers to purchase "failed" institutions

True savings are insured via the FDIC. Investments mean that there are risks involved.

well, up to 100k as we saw with Indymac. However, what if we can't cover all of the funds? Then what. I don't know how this all works, but it seems as if "insurance" is a loose terms nowadays.

Well the 100,000 shouldn't have been a shock to anyone.

As far as the insurance, that is why you'll see regulators stepping in to run failing institutions. I know people that worked for the OTS during the S&L crisis and heard some great stories about taking control of an institution.

So...as far as industries, job security, and what not. what strategies do you have besides horde cash?

I'm honestly not that worried

As far as some "recession proof" industries, you could try food manufacturers and distributors as well as financial intermediaries. There are companies that service most of the financial institutions with niche services that won't be impacted by any credit crunch.

This is hypothetical, so we are all prepared!

Tropical paradise. Hot half naked Brazilian women on the beach every day.
Cocktails on the beach every day. Cock tales every night.
Go out in a blaze of glory.

Unemployment was at 4.9% back then.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/01/news/economy/jobs_january/

and is 8.5% now.

We've only dug the hole deeper. Borrowed more money to avoid the inevitable, what appreciable reforms have been enacted to do anything here?

There isn't any industry thriving right now here in the US. The gains we are seeing are minor, the fundamental flaws in the economy are still here. What do you think is happening in Greece right now? We're going to eventually have the same debt crisis that Europe is experiencing, we're just building the foundation for that.

If you truly rely on money for survival, my condolences. Your parents shirked their basic duty to you, IMO.

But the well-executed economic disaster is but a clever diversion while the Feds ready your internment cage.

The only real threat I see for a self-sufficient man is avoiding capture/murder by my own government.

We didn't all get fishing nets and magic beans from our parents. :(

Oh, the wine industry is thriving. Thanks to me, bitches (both my time spent at the office, and my consumption)!!

AMEN! When I was 17, right before Y2K, my parents signed myself and my cousin up for this crazy survival class. We spent 2-3 nights by ourselves, dumped in the wildnerness (in summertime) with very few things necessary to survive. My parents thought this would help me out when technology and all else fails and we have to find ways to survive.

It was a rad experience, made much more rad by the fact I happened to have had my pipe and pollen.

I take that as an admission that you feel ill-equipped in the basic, rudimentary survival skills that allowed our species to survive and evolve over the eons we have existed. That's really sad, especially if you have family that looks to you in crisis.

The good news is it's still not too late to learn. Especially right now while we still have libraries and the internet.
