OT Swarm of Earthquakes in Yellowstone

There has been a swarm of over 200 earthquakes in a week around the Yellowstone Caldera. A 4.5 just happened on Tuesday. Hope its not going to erupt soon. America would be fucked.

It's due. I was just reading an article about it from a couple of years ago. My numbers may be a bit off from memory.

2.1 million years ago...boom
1.3 million years ago....boom
664 thousand years ago...boom
70 thousand years ago..smaller boom

So it looks like a span from the first major boom is 800 thousand years. Then about 700 thousand. Then to another smaller boom around 600 thousand years later. So, we probably aren't due for another huge one for half a million years but that 70 thousand years ago kinda rounds off from 664 thousand to zero. Which means we're getting a big but not huge boom any day.

You'll only get 6-10 inches of ash on your house. Not the three feet you'd get with a major eruption.

I am gonna check my homeowner's policy tomorrow.

Apparently the question has been asked. This from the USGS site:

Scientists agree that drilling into a volcano would be of questionable usefulness. In addition to the enormous expense and technological difficulties in drilling through hot, mushy rock, drilling is unlikely to have much effect. At near magmatic temperatures and pressures, any hole would rapidly become sealed by minerals crystallizing from the natural fluids that are present at those depths.
