Taxes and Obama supporters

I would prefer to pay for my own school; if a public school is one of the options then that's great. For those that cannot afford to educate their own children, I'm happy to pay taxes to help them.

Who is stopping you from paying for your own school? I'm sure your local public school will gratefully accept a donation.

My analogy was bad, but this one fits? Ok. carry on.
If I was opposed to cars, and them being handed out, but the government took money from me to buy cars, I wouldn't take the car from them. Maybe stand up for something if I am strongly opposed to the "One car per citizen" government mandate. You take the car and bitch about it. Whatever works for you.

If I'm forced to purchase a car, then you bet I'll use it. Having money taken and spent for you then not utilizing it doesn't make you noble; it makes you a sucker.

My tax dollars go to food stamps, no? I don't use food stamps. I guess I am a sucker. My tax dollars go to public schools. I do not currently send a child to school. Sucker! My tax dollars help fund the fire department, yet I have never called on them to fight a fire at my house. I am sure there are many ways my tax dollars are being used that I am not taking advantage of. I imagine you are not as well. Putting in the form of something as a car is a strawman, though I get criticized for that.

a better analogy is buying you condoms, and then introducing you to a large gay man who is going to fuck your asshole

Do you qualify for food stamps? Do you have a child that attends school and you can't afford private school? Do you wish to not have fire coverage?

I guess you could quit your job and qualify for food stamps, knock someone up to send a kid to public school and set your house on fire. It's a (relatively) free country (although setting your house on fire would put you in jail).

I would argue we have a sufficient social safety net. If you can't feed, clothe, house, provide health coverage or educate yourself, there are government programs to cover them. I don't mind paying for the helpless; I mind paying for those who can help themselves. For those that wish to expand the role of government, it doesn't make sense to me they wouldn't pay more for that privilege.

ok, then that has little to do with your sucker/noble comment. I am sure Icould have set myself up when I quit my job to make it so I was able to receive unemployment, food stamps, whatever. I know people who have done similar things, all which I thought were shitty. I could have definitely used the extra money. I did not. So that makes me a sucker for not abusing a system?

There's a difference to being taxed to have a social safety net and to being taxed to just have the governmental equivalent of an $838B "making it rain" party.

not sure what either have to do with your initial post, or if you're breaking off a bit.

Simple. I'm not an anarchist, I'm a believer in limited government. I'm happy to pay for the very basics, but don't wish for it to expand. All I asked was those who wanted a larger government, if they paid extra for the privilege, or they paid the bare minimum as do I?

I want free stuff and I don't want to pay for it.

That puts me in the 47%

Yay!

wait, to pay for it you have to raise taxes.

So....

Yay! That puts you in the "all of us".

Raise your taxes, but not mine. I'm getting in the spirit of how you think.

no, my spirit is don't start wars with countries, don't let banks do whatever the fuck they want and don't let wall street do whatever they want, cap how much money senators can make as a senator (and a rep), it shouldn't be more than the average salary in the US, increase the amount of time they have to work to get retirement and quit letting big companies get away with paying little in taxes.

thats part of the spirit in which I think.

Big companies pay huge amounts of taxes. They're also the collector of vast sums of taxes on behalf of the government. Anyone who's run a business with a payroll knows they are constantly writing checks from the company account to the government.

As for our elected officials? I'd rather see them term limited or time limited. Like congress meets a month a year. Cut their pay.

Anyhow, I want to go back to college and have someone else pay for it. My health care, too. Next time I'm between jobs, a 99 week vacation would be nice.

I want it for free, though. Surely there's people who make more than me that can better afford to pay for what I want.

for example:

The Senators make about 17,400,000 per year. Sure, it's a drop in the bucket, but lets say they cap it at 75. That'd be 7500000.

There's a savings of what, 10 million?

And then the house, 75,690,000. Cap that at 75K and it's a savings of 32,625,000 over 40 million.

So thats a combined savings of 50 million.

Is that a HUGE #? nope.

But after 10 years it's a savings of 500 million.

Me too. I wish they'd actually do their job instead of taking as much vacation time as they do.

I like how you are making a straw-man here. I expect that out of papag, not you.

Everything you just listed aligns with a wanting a smaller government.

which seems to suggest it's not a "conservative vs liberal" or "republican vs democrat" issue that people make it out to be.

but that can't be true, because I'm a free loader who wants the government to pay for everything and provide me with a house, a job, food, clothing, medical care and free condoms so I can screw tons of women.

Ok, that last part is true, but the rest isn't.

Who called you a freeloader?

I want to be a freeloader, though. It's a lot easier than dragging my ass out of bed every day and hauling it to work in the salt mines each day.

It is easier to be a freeloader, and thankfully the freeloader party is full of both Republicans and Democrats. An equal share of the party too.

I actually think part of is that many liberals think that not enough government regulation is what causes things like the latest housing bubble and burst.

Regulation is a farce.

Sarbannes-Oxley didn't prevent any disaster from occurring. S&L's have failed in quantities more than once, in spite of regulations and new regulations.

What regulations really do is favor one interest group over another. Disasters are used as excuses to enact them after the fact.

Overgeneralize much?

Prove it.

So you think Enron was no big deal?

What interest group, in your view, benefits from Sarbox?

56 posts in, and not a single Obama supporter will cop to giving additional tax dollars to the federal government, other than the absolute minimum that is asked of them.

So what? Probably nobody voluntarily sends a check to the government whenever they notice themselves speeding, either.

Dumb analogy. Nobody here is arguing that the fines for you speeding should be higher.
