Cashman always seems to be in that position doesn't he. The one policy I feel needs to be changed is negotiations during the season. We should of had Cano signed midway through last year regardless of at the time Scott Boris's presence. Then we could of had leverage at the deadline this year if we were inclined to rebuild which was not the case.

Simply put they have no choice but to resign Cano. With the current state of the team you cannot leave yourself a major void like that and have nothing to build around.

1, he isn't enough to build around, 2, he likely won't be good for long enough to build around, and 3 they do have a choice... it's a crappy one, but it is still a choice...

Rickey Henderson was perceived as lazy and selfish...but dam every team wanted his non leadership ing ass.

Assuming Arod is suspended if you resign Cano you atleast know you have Gardner, Cano, Tex and Soriano in there next year. If Jeter can come back healthy that's not a hideous five. Without Cano it's complete garbage and another giant spot to try and fill.

Al with all due respect Henderson was a hot dog & selfish but NEVER lazy. I mean you can hardly call someone who led the league in SBs 12 times as lazy. Or someone who was stealing over 60 bases when he was 39. Or over 35 when he was in his 40s.

Now I'm all for resigning Cano, I just wouldn't go beyond 6 years. (37 years old).

He was the ultimate me player. He complied stats for himself not the team. You talk about stats...canos stats vs all other 2bers are odd the charts. This notion about being a leader is hilarious. Its baseball..was babe ruth a leader?

I agree no 7 year deal but there will be team that will go that far so the question is...do you want half the player 4 years down the road or...right now as you are not replacing with a equal player. Unlike yhe current aging stars extending cano isn't the worst thing because 7 years from now it would only be cano..not like today where we have arod..jeter..cc..all overblown contracts to deal with.

You're right Al some team will offer him somewhere in the neighborhood of an 8 year deal, I'm just hoping the Yankees in there desperation don't match it.

Brett Gardner is not under contract next year... Jeter has a player option... I doubt he'll turn it down, BUT there really is no one next year... Tex is seriously declining... Jeter will be an unknown, why would Cano want that and what difference will Cano make?
