Republican lawmakers and a Republican governor have green-lit a new law in Tennessee that makes it possible for people to have their voting rights revoked as punishment for participating in protests.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed the measure into law last week after a special three-day legislative session, reports AP.

Under the new law, demonstrators who camp on state property—as scores have been doing in front of the state’s Capitol building since George Floyd’s killing earlier this year—can now be charged with a Class D felony, up from the misdemeanor it was previously.

Tennessee is one of 21 states that punishes felons by taking away their right to vote, and Gov. Lee made it clear that this threat is meant as a warning to the protestors who have been forcing elected officials there to pay attention to their concerns about racial injustice in the state.

Good God, almighty.

By the looks of that pic, it would occur to me that those on top of the building shouldn't be there. It brings a whole new meaning to peaceful protesting....I doubt what our Constitution crafters had in mind.

Sometimes, there's a thin blue line between peaceful protesting and inciting riots. That said, I think there have been 13 or so riots declared in Portland this far.....and seemingly getting worse. I think Governor Lee is laying out a deterrent. The left will quickly jump to paint this a a Republican wanting the keep Democrats from voting. Book it, Danno.

So the penalty for that is to lose your constitutional right to vote for the rest of your life?

the first amendment is not a left wing conspiracy. When your party fucks up, just say they fucked up. Don't bait the opposition with dumb assumptions...anyone who understands the Constitution knows this is completely unconstitutional....imagine them taking the vote away for life from an airline strike or a basketball strike...this is some strong arm bullshit and it won't fly. I'm calling bullshit on your thin blue line theory.it's more of a fat white line....this country was formed by homegrown protesters.

They use to think that hanging was a good deterrent for stealing a loaf of bread. Most of us are over that paradigm now a'days.

It's weird watching the hills you keep deciding to die on.

Many states already have laws that restrict felons from voting. This ain't a new thing.

As I had mentioned, many states ALREADY prevent felons from voting. I don't thing we want protesters camped out atop our federal buildings. I know I don't

Florida has just recently adopted a new way of preventing ex felons from voting. The voters allowed ex cons to vote and the Republicans, governor and legislature, made it near impossible to actually vote.
Most states allow ex cons to vote. In fact, no state disallows it entirely.

learn the difference between protesters and felons.....what you're cheering for is soldiers on top of federal buildings, in voting stations and teargassing citizens....what are you, a monarchist? Your Royal Family wannabes will be speaking this week and yes....you are cheering for the wrong side of history...stop following fake presidential fear mongers and understand how we became a free country...it wasn't by oppressing votes. Weak sauce. Make better decisions this time around...the people of my country will not stand for turning into a police state....these protests you fear are an important chapter in our civil rights unless you don't believe in equality and fair treatment.

We've been witnessing a WHOLE lot of felonistic activity out there these days! I trust the intentions of my Governor. I'll leave it at that.

We've seen a lot of Trump supporters that are racists...that doesn't mean you're a racist....I'll leave it at that....your state has a horrible crime record...I wouldn't trust that leadership at all

Tell that to your Portland protesters.
the arsonists in Portland do not represent the majority of protesters. ....Damian Lillard was a protester....should he lose his right to vote because he marches for BLM? Fuck that dumb shit. Get woke! Some might say ignoring safe practices about covid is actually more dangerous than lighting a trash can on fire ore spray painting a slogan on a building....should we put infected people in isolation camps and take away their vote for endangering society?..Absolutely not...see how that works
get woke and heal....

He's virtually a brand new governor. Give it some time.

Tennessee has a reputation as one of the most backward states in the union. Your brand new governor seems prepared to keep that tradition going.

Fortunately, there are federal courts to protect the normal people in your state from the rest of you!

Wow, I think you missed a lot of points. Our Governor Lee would not be arresting the likes of what Dame and his ilk has been doing. I mean, c'mon, man...the mob has been inching their protests closer and closer to flat-out riots. Do you think state and local leadership should just cast a blind eye and let bygones be bygones?

BTW, it seems to me that ever since the federal government law enforcement left Portland....the protests have actually gotten worse. Go figure, appears to be more of a local thing.

Well, we sure do know that, while plenty weird, Portland sure ain't backward! I still hope and pray that there's hope for it as I was born and raised there. I'm plenty sad in the meantime, though.

BTW, Tennessee certainly has a long way to go, but it's not totally backwards in many respects.

I believe in the right to protest at all costs....and much of the arson over the summer has nothing to do with the actuall protest....and things aren't worse...they were worse in Michigan when the AR15 toting good old boys stormed the govt buildings without resistance from the police......if they had been black...the cops would've taken action..this is why the world is changing before your eyes and nobody will be looking back.....enough is enough.....your white privilege isn't a good reason to oppress protesters and stop them from voting however they choose. I'm anti arson....I'm anti martial law.....face the culture you voted for and have the balls to say..."enough is enough" ...in the words of Sam Cooke....a change is gonna come...this country will rise up against oppression no matter how many laws you pass to oppress the common folk

A felon is someone convicted of a serious crime....not for protesting but for actually commiting a crime....learn the difference
