I believe in the right to protest at all costs....and much of the arson over the summer has nothing to do with the actuall protest....and things aren't worse...they were worse in Michigan when the AR15 toting good old boys stormed the govt buildings without resistance from the police......if they had been black...the cops would've taken action..this is why the world is changing before your eyes and nobody will be looking back.....enough is enough.....your white privilege isn't a good reason to oppress protesters and stop them from voting however they choose. I'm anti arson....I'm anti martial law.....face the culture you voted for and have the balls to say..."enough is enough" ...in the words of Sam Cooke....a change is gonna come...this country will rise up against oppression no matter how many laws you pass to oppress the common folk

Fair enough.

Well, we sure do know that, while plenty weird, Portland sure ain't backward! I still hope and pray that there's hope for it as I was born and raised there. I'm plenty sad in the meantime, though.

BTW, Tennessee certainly has a long way to go, but it's not totally backwards in many respects.

Oh, I didn't mean backwards economically--I would expect Tennessee to have found its footing economically after all the dollars the federal government has poured into the state (Tennessee Valley Authority ring any bells?). I meant backwards socially in how it treats racial minorities, LGBTQ+ people, women, how it handles law enforcement.

It's not surprising that the Tennessee government wants to outlaw freedom of expression--it's a state that values straight white men and no one else, and wants to keep it that way. Protests disrupt the status quo.

Yeah, it ought to get through the appeal process sometime next year.

I'll be surprised if there isn't an injunction against the law long before the appeals process ends.

Actually, the TVA is for sale and found its beginnings through FDR's efforts. Many here are still thankful for that.

Many states already have laws that restrict felons from voting. This ain't a new thing.

Yes, but protesting isn't on the same level as rape, murder, robbery, and other felony level crimes.

Probably. Stupid and unconstitutional law to begin with. That said, nobody is going to get convicted of this “felony” in time to lose voting rights for the November election. The counter suits against the State of Tennessee for violating protesters legitimate rights of free speech should be fun.

Yeah, it's worse. Because all of those cases, if you didn't dress like a tart, hang out in the wrong places and had a gun to defend yourself, none of those things would happen!

How long does that line of letters plan to go? And, really, specifically, how does the state government mistreat these folks. I sure don't see it. But again, I've only lived here a few years.

Look, EVERYONE deserves to be unequivocally treated with absolute and unilateral respect. I'm a 100% proponent of that.

I never said it was. And, I never said legal protesting was a crime of any kind. Occupying may be a different story. We shall see how all of this plays out.

I believe in most states a misdemeanor can be up to a full year in jail.

Perhaps he overreacted. I can't say with certainty right now. I'm sure he knew what the ramifications would be when he penned the bill.

Just reinstate corporal punishment. A few days in stocks in the courthouse square would be a deterrent, especially when your buddies are trying to burn the place down.

Looks like republicans found a new method to try and suppress the votes.

Should have let the south secede. This is embarrassing for America.

I don't know, a lot of rednecks are getting pretty worked up over face masks. The law may have unintended consequences.

No no no, if it prohibits them from breathing free from the tyranny of a face mask it becomes a deep state issue - which we all know is because of that devil Clinton or Obama.

I suspect that if this law were allowed to take effect, they'd find ways to define protests in such a way that it only affected non-white people. I'm sure law enforcement would have wide latitude to make judgement calls on arrests.

No need ...I can tell by your posts that you're still feverish ...how is your wife feeling? :)

Nah, you've checked in plenty...and much appreciated. Cup? Nah, he's a different breed of seething Trump/Republican hatership. I just dangle stuff for the fun of it. Only after he's sought me out and trotted out his vitriol, though. I don't follow any of his other posts by any stretch.

You and Cup would make a great Odd Couple remake.
