If the refs are going to start calling techs for any kind of complaining, maybe they should start doing a better job of calling fouls....

The tech thing is so inconsistent too. At times they won't call the T if its a tight game based on the game situation, but they would if its earlier in the game just to "set a tone". really ridiculous.

The techs on Miller and Johnson were bullshit. They weren't trying to show up the ref.

about 80% of the tech's I've seen this year have been BS

The refs missed one or two technical fouls, but I think they did a pretty good job of consistently applying the new rule.

I agree that it'd be great if the refs would get better at other calls if they just tried harder, but there are ALWAYS going to be missed calls. At least we don't need to see players bitching about them now.

Or, rather, FOR now.

based on their standards, Griffin should have gotten a tech in the 4th while the blazers were starting the run. If the refs called it honestly like they had been, would have caused a HUGE chorous of boos.

After playing the game the same way for so long its like a natural reaction for most of them to argue. I think in a couple weeks players will start adapting though.

roy got away with doing the exact same motion as miller got T'd up for tonight, it was weird to see. also, hubbie brown mentioned that the armon T wasn't called when one of the laker players did the same thing yesterday, didn't see the laker game, but it was good to hear that the commentators were at least seeing the inconsistency.

They're only going to call it on non-stars. Just watch.

Wish we called techs on people on here!

If a PM from a mode threatening me to be banned from this joint = a tech, I have 5 or 6.

If only we had a stat to track that.... you might be the Rasheed of this "joint" :devilwink:

My biggest issue with the new tech rule is that it is inconsistent. Roy did the same thing that non stars did and the refs looked the other way. Lebron raised his arms after a no call, and the refs looked the other way. Kobe raised his arms on opening night and the refs looked the other way. Call it on everyone, or call it on no one. It's $2,000 for one of those tech's, so it means a bit more.

I have yet to see them call the new rule. Admittedly I missed the Clips game last night, but I was looking for it in the Phoenix game and they missed it 3-4 times. I saw Turk go right towards an official after he was called for the foul and didn't get the whistle. Roy also had one where he was complaining and didn't get called for it. So I just assumed they were laying off now in real games and not calling them.

I think the new rule on complaints sucks, and was put into place to protect the refs from being exposed when they (frequently) make bad calls.

I wonder how many games Rasheed would be tossed from this year, if he were still playing?

Go Blazers

Can you imagine the frustration that will occur in those games (For every team) when your team is just getting screwed? It happens to every team. How do you vent your frustration? You will get T'd up to compound the bad job by the refs.

On the flip side, Portland should benefit the most. yes we have some players who complain. But not in comparison to other good teams. And Nate barely says a word (One of my few complaints about Nate over the years) So this should help. The Euro's will have a tough time especially. How about Jerry Sloan? Doc Rivers? Van Gundy? The Stoops Brothers. (oops wrong sport)

Yes its a horrible system. Your giving 110% diving for a ball, and a loose ball foul is called, who's the foul on? Oh its on you, surprise! Oh but don't be surprised, you'll get a T!

I understand importance of not talking to the ref's, but this is outta hand. There should be 10 sec grace period after a call or something... I'm pretty sure the ref's can handle it

There is absolutely no way this rule will be enforced consistently across the league. It wasn't even consistent in the same game for the same team last night. Roy did exactly what Miller did. Miller got a T, Roy didn't.

I like the idea of trying to reduce the bitching and moaning, but this rule is going to be very frustrating to watch as a fan.

I don't think ANYONE has threatened to ban you. We might have mentioned that if you continued to make personal attacks you'd be suspended. We hope it'd never come to that, of course, but a suspension is temporary while bans tend to be associated with forever.

Just to clarify for the record. :)

2 so far would be my guess :)

Here is what I saw:

When it came to calling the techs on the role players, they were pretty even. They did call techs for the same reason on varous role players for both the Clippers and Blazers last night.

But the flip side. I have seen Brandon Roy, Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, all stars, do the exact same thing and not get called for it. Which means in the end, that the refs will fuck the teams without the big stars. Same story. Just more tools for them to do it with.

I actually believe this new rule will result in more fights this season. Players need to vent during the heat of battle. You get a little pissed, you vent then you move on. All this rule is going to do is make them keep it bottled up until the cork finally pops.

I like the rule if they'd apply it to the stars as well. And there's really no reason why they shouldn't. After all, a tech doesn't get counted against the six fouls it takes to get tossed out of a game, which is the whole (absurd IMO) justification for "superstar treatment." (Who wants to pay to see a Magic game where Howard gets ejected in the third quarter?)

The net effect of calling a tech on Roy or Cunningham is the same. A free throw, and the game goes on. I suppose if a star is dumb enough to accrue a second tech, then he'd get thrown out. But most of the stars are pretty smart people, and are smart enough not to put themselves in that position.

To those who say the players should be allowed to express themselves in tense situations, I say, "Tough." Lots of people have jobs that have tense situations where if shit goes wrong they have to keep things bottled up. If a nurse hands a surgeon the wrong scalpel, is it ok for him to jump back and yell, "What the fuck?" at the nurse? If an actor fucks up his line in the middle of a major performance, should an actress shout, "You dumbass!"?

Dealing with the real world often means letting shit that pisses you off go, because you'll only make it worse by reacting. I've got no problem with that reality being enforced on the basketball court. I want the players to focus on the game, not the refs.

Damn, with this new rule, it's a good thing we traded Bayless when we did. He's never met a call he didn't complain about.

I think the rule should be reapplied to allow for an initial reaction. Stopping a "come on!" or "he hacked me!" is awfully difficult and in some cases impossible. It's when you continue beyond the initial reaction (a second or less) I think the tech is warranted.

I don't really have a problem with the new rule provided that it is called consistently, that home court isn't a factor in its application, and that stars don't get special consideration.

In other words, I think the new rule stinks and will likely impact the outcome of a lot of close games.

Totally disagree. This is professional sports. Anyone who's ever played sports knows the amount of emotion that goes into competing hard, and that is greatly multiplied when you're playing in front of 20,000 people in the playoffs. Comparing that to a nurse handing a doctor the wrong scalpel is ridiculous...

I'm all for decreasing the amount of complaining, but the techs I saw last night were a joke. When you're caught up in the game and a bad call goes against you it's just natural to have a small reaction. It's called human nature. Armon raised his hands and immediately put one down as if to say 'it's on me'. To T a guy up for that is bullshit. He was letting it go, he didn't make a big scene, it was the ref who made it a bigger deal that it was.

I don't have a problem with this, either. It's a good compromise.

The real point of this rule is to not allow tantrums to impact the nature of the game. It's really hard for a 1 second reaction to impact anything, other than to let the ref know you hated his call.
