The Bench Had 7 Points in 61 Minutes

Why is it stupid?

All those rookie minutes speed development.

Batum hasn't peaked yet and needs the game time to want to be the man.

Aldridge is in his peak and you want to reduce his PT?

These aren't aged vets we need to rest their legs for the playoffs. They are playing because the bench is useless and its even more useless to rest them for some unknown reason

Just because they're in their twenties doesn't mean their immune to fatigue and wearing down. They'll still get plenty of minutes... And it's clearly not for some "unknown" reason...

What is this "fatigue" and "wearing down" going to do, manifest itself as an injury? As we've seen, injuries and playing time aren't really mutually exclusive.

Umm... what does fatigue usually do for a basketball player? Poor shot selection, bad decision making, bad defense, inconsistency, etc. And yes, it does increase the chance of injury...

If you think it's worth it to run them into the ground for a chance at the 8th seed and first round exit, then we disagree.

We won't be "running them into the ground". they are all young guys who need a lot of burn. Poor shot selection, bad decision making, bad defense, inconsistency...the things you mentioned are a symptom of not getting enough on court playing time.

Lillard and Batum especially could use more PT and on court time to find their niches. Lillard is a rookie, he should be getting heavy minutes...it will only help him. Aldridge is probably the best PF in the league right now, all things considered, and we're still looking for him to improve on several things. In game playing time is the best time to do this. Batum is super athletic, he should be good to go. These guys are all young, well conditioned professional athletes.

We pay these guys over $10 million a year, they should be able to play the minutes of guys who command that much money.

Spoken like someone who's never played competitive sports in his life. You don't think 35 minutes a night together is enough to work on the things you mention? Like I said, we disagree and I'll leave it at that.

Yes. We should shut them down...for the lottery! :MARIS61:

I must have missed your illustrious NBA career.

Are you still learning English or something? I never once even mentioned shutting them down. How I can clearly write '35 minutes', and you take that to mean shutting them down, is beyond me.

Talk about :MARIS61:

So 35 minutes max, after that Stotts should pull them out no matter the outcome, got it.

Unless they're #1, #2, #3 in the league in minutes, big deal. they're probably as athletic as any player in the league anyway. Are they whining about playing too many minutes? This is a fabricated problem by a blazers fan base that likes to do nothing more than whine and complain about whatever they can latch on.

Sure, the Bench is terrible. But even when they play they really aren't getting any better. So play the starters.

Where is the data that shows a a reduction of 2-3 minutes per game when going from 37-38 to 35 mpg drastically reduces the probability of injury?

If the bench is terrible, and "Poor shot selection, bad decision making, bad defense, inconsistency" are all symptoms of not getting enough on-court playing time, then it stands to reason that we would benefit by giving our bench players more playing time.

Makes sense to me.

Where's the data that shows fatigue doesn't increase ones susceptibility to injury? Use google. When did I say "drastically"?

I'm not reinventing the wheel here. Nobody wants to see the bench play less than me, I'm just worried it's going to hurt the team in the long run when you play guys so much; especially a rookie, a guy coming off injury and a guy who played in the Olympics this summer. During a reload year, I just ask what's the point? I don't get it.

I'm not making a claim. But I wouldn't be surprised if there is no statistical evidence that going from 37mpg to 35mpg for 40 games will really affect a career. I'm simply questioning the one you made. You see, if you want to start arguing with people, implying they've never played competitive sports, and making the claim that reducing minutes from 37mpg to 35mpg, you should be able to back it up. Why not reduce their minutes to 28mpg?

Our bench is simply awful. There is no other way to say it. I don't think I've seen a bench worse than the one we mustered together.

Where does 37 come from? Damian's averaging 40 in the month of January, Batum 41. Aldridge is at 38 for the year. I like how you keep shaving a little bit off the top to help your argument. It smells like desperation. :pimp:

35 is just a number I picked out of thin air in response to the other guy: "You don't think 35 minutes a night together is enough to work on the things you mention?" because it seems like a reasonable amount to shoot for. 28 seems like overkill.

If you don't think there's a difference between 40 & 35 mpg, would you be okay with them playing 45 instead of 40? Since it wouldn't "drastically" increase the chance of injury and whatnot? Why not just play them the entire game? Is it because players get tired and it begins to be counter-productive?

It doesn't matter how many minutes I'm ok with playing them. If I pick a number it would be doing the same as you, which is picking a random number between 48 and 0 with absolutely nothing but a feeling to back it up. Certainly players get tired within a game, so not playing them 48 minutes may improve the chance of winning a particular game or increasing their production towards the end of a particular game. But i haven't seen anything to show that reducing playing time by 3-5mpg for the ~40 remaining games reduces the chance of injury.

YOU SOUND LIKE YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED MORE THAN 10 MPG IN THE NBA YO.

Speaking of the bench.......whatever happened to that Leonard kid? At least we didn't waste a lotto pick on him!

Severely sprained ankle. You know, Portland big men and injuries and curses and all of that jazz.

The mark to beat: 82 games in 5 seasons. He's off to a great start Brent, but does he have the determination to fail displayed by that great anti-champion Oden?
