Best potato chips - Zapp's

You eat a small bag of Zapp's, and you feel like you just ate a double bacon cheeseburger, but damn, it's worth it... those chips are too good. They're kettle cooked in peanut oil, and they're seasoned with a lot of different Louisiana seasonings. I'm not sure where they're not available, but they're in every store or deli I've been in from Memphis to NOLA, and I hear they're in Texas too.

Best oatmeal - Snoqualmie

Go Blazers

Any way to get that in the southeast? I'm on a program where I'm eating oatmeal every morning... getting pretty tired of Quaker Oats.

Awesome. Ever been to Stanley Park? :)

It's a successful socialist institution. Vancouver has much better museums, too, than American cities.

It's actually called Snoqualmie Falls Lodge oatmeal. I don't know about their distribution.

The bag shows an e-addy of www.continentalmills.com. You might be able to get them to tell you where to buy it locally, or have them sell you a case and ship it to you.

better than Turnbull & Asher?

I think so. The collars are too high and stiff for my taste. Not to mention that the point of a T&A shirt is to have bright stripes; I'm a solid white/blue kind of guy.

gotcha...I've never tried either, but T&A's seem to get all the pub--much like "Bose" allows you to charge a 150% premium for a branded product, I wasn't sure if the juice was worth the squeeze.

I'm getting some shirts made when I get back, because I have a pretty tapered upper body and a long neck. So instead of buying a shirt and tailoring it, I'm just having the tailor start from scratch and have the high collars built in.

Plus, I'm still young and unimportant enough that I think I can get away with some gingham and windowpane from time to time.

Best meal I had on sabbatical: Slanted Door in SF Ferry Building.

Been hearing a ridiculous amount of hype for this place, all word of mouth. Apparently its as good as advertised. Gotta try it some time. I work a few blocks from the Ferry Building but I never have a reason to stay downtown for dinner.

Orlando.jpgNever had commercial hummus and pita as good as my own. Best orange juice, freshly squeezed organic OJ at Berkeley Bowl market.

As to why it took a sabbatical to get to Slanted Door, that was part of my sabbatical, to go to restaurants. I went there as part of my morning in the Ferry Building. I rarely schlep over to SF just to eat.

As to what I had: duck confit salad, pork noodles (rice noodles, very fresh bean sprouts, meat 3 ways, braised loin, fried belly, minced in spring rolls, dipping sauce), really good tea, and an ice cream sandwich of premium ice cream between two freshly baked still warm snickerdoodles. Very simple & good.

GOD, black holes are also not holes. You are having some holy problems.

Orlando is the best cat in the world. And he's only going to be around a few more months, having been diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
