The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking at ways to improve their team this offseason so that they’re not in a position to win the No. 1 pick for yet another year. Cleveland isn’t settling for just assembling spare parts to get better, they’re going for a home run acquisition and are chasing LaMarcus Aldridge.

If Embiid checks out and has no red-flags I don't see how you can't seriously consider is if you're Neil/Paul.

Isn't there another thread that's EXACTLY this from like a week ago?

Who is fansided?

I think there is a small possibility they would move LA for the #1 pick, but I don't think it will be to take a 7 footer with a known injury issue. Been there and done that.

Jabari Parker or Wiggins. And maybe in that order.

Yeah but that was hypothetical -- "if the Cavs called tomorrow....."

Seeing that they really are chasing LMA, I think it deserves it's own thread.

:MARIS61:

-- An ESPN report mentioned Bulls center Joakim Noah, Hawks center Al Horford and Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge as potential Cavs targets. But sources told FOX Sports Ohio on Wednesday the acquisition of Noah is extremely unlikely. Also, the Cavs' feelings on Horford were described as "lukewarm."
-- The Cavs are indeed interested in Aldridge, but it's hard to envision the Blazers being open to moving him after their magical season. Aldridge was great all season and particularly remarkable in the playoffs. His price would be very high.

If you're not LeBron or KD anyone could be had for the right price.

The Blazers giving up Aldridge seems highly unlikely but you can never say never in the NBA. He was pretty unhappy with the Blazers last season leading up to this one but the winning ways have seemingly changed his mind, and leaving that to go to the sports vortex of suck that Cleveland represents probably isn’t high on his list.

Still, money talks and it will be interesting to see if the Cavs are indeed able to get Aldridge or if this is just another one of their cooky ideas they think about but can never pull off.

"cooky" ideas

There is no sure fire superstar in this draft so if im trading my best player I want to make sure im rebuilding. Since we wont be rebuilding even if we trade LMA id turn the #1 for LMA down.

I'm one of LA's biggest critics on this board but I still think we would miss him if he's traded.
With that said, if we can get most of his salary as cap-space and Dante Exum I think it's worth it. Wouldn't trade him for Embiid (too risky) or for Parker but Wiggins and Exum I really like. Exum I think fits better with our roster.

Again, if there is even the slightest doubt in the minds of Blazer brass that LA won't re-sign here, then you will never get a better offer than #1 plus whatever perhaps. You have to look at this seriously if you are Portland.

Maybe stay away from the injured center with the number one overall pick. That hasn't been the best move for Portland.

Fwiw Before Embiid declared he got advice from long time family friend Luc Mbah a Moute and ....Nicolas Batum.

They don't share the same agent, how are they connected?

Yeah for as much as we all can speculate and argue on both sides, I would imagine Neil has at least a decent idea of what Aldridge is thinking, and would be in better position to trade him if he knew that possibility of leaving was strong

Is Embiid from Cameroon? Wasn't Nic's dad from there? Pretty sure Nic has ties there-- I think he and his mom run a charity or something there if I remember correctly from twitter.

Not to mention last year and the year before.

Trade an all star for an unknown. A young all star.
So glad that the board is not GM.

Nico's father is from Cameroon. Embiid is from Cameroon too. Good job DETECTIVE yuyuza1. That's right, you're being promoted!

I wouldn't say young. He's going to be 29 and he's in his prime, so I think he'd fall under the "veteran All-Star" category.

I guess the problem I have is the growing pains will have again if we trade LA. Getting younger is always good, but moreso for a rebuilding team. But as mentioned if there is just a small margin of doubt that Aldridge won't resign, you trade him for the number 1 pick. Build around Lillard and getting the number 1 pick is an excellent start.

I think there's another reason. Do you think this core (Lillard/Aldridge/Batum) is enough to ever win a championship? If you do not, you have to seriously think about changing the core. We can add bench players, and possibly even get to the WCF, but the last team to win a championship without multiple Hall Of Famers on their roster was the Pistons in 2003, and they had the DPOY.

Of course it is a possibility that LA won't re-sign. We know it, Olshey knows it, Allen knows it.

Doesn't mean, in my mind, you trade LA. Pretty sure Olshey and Allen are thinking the same thing, but we will find out.

The problem with thinking like that is very few NBA teams have a core of three players that can win you a championship. there is no blueprint besides get multiple superstars in their prime for winning a championship.
I think its more important to build a winning organization/culture that can develop young talent and bring in FAs that fit a system much like Spurs/Miami/Dallas/OKC seem to do.
If your just look at your core and say "can they win a championship" then almost every team is going to say no.

I think we could if two things happen: As you mentioned improve the bench and the second thing being somehow, someway we learn to play defense. If we never improve on defense than it really doesn't matter who we field on the team. Even if you don't think a core of Aldridge/Lillard/Batum cant win it all, it isn't like getting the number 1 pick is a surefire thing and really could make us worse for years to come if they never pan out. At least we know what we have with Aldridge and that is an all-star caliber player. It is tough, but if Aldridge gives even the slightest hint as to wanting to leave town, you trade him asap for that pick.

Re: The Cavs target LMAo

If the Cavs were to offer #1 and Michael Bennett, would you do it?

In response to Nate, I think this organization is sold that this core can get it done. Not only are they sold but they got me sold on the idea. I think LA and Batum both have another level or two they haven't reached. I feel the same about Dame. If they make a few adjustments in the depth and defensively and these three hit these levels at the same time. This core can do it. The longer they play together as a unit, the better and more seasoned they will get. In two years, LA, Dame and Nic will have something similar to what Duncan,Parker and Ginoboli have. And they have 10 years together.

The team likes each other. They like the coach. If the chemistry remains and with enough maturation. They have a title or two in them.
