Ocasio-Cortez claims she can't afford DC apartment, but records show she has at least $15,000 in savings
By Lukas Mikelionis | Fox News

Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claims that she's unable to afford an apartment in Washington, D.C., until she begins collecting her congressional salary, but records show she has more than enough to plunk down on an apartment in the U.S. capital.

After months of fostering an image as a working-class Democrat, Ocasio-Cortez told the New York Times shortly after her Nov. 6 general election win that she won’t be able to afford an apartment in the Washington, D.C., area until her new $174,000-a-year salary kicks in next year. The median rent in D.C. is $2,700, according to real estate website Zillow.

“I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real,” Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times.

Most have taken Ocasio-Cortez’ claims at their face value, praising her for drawing attention to the housing crisis and that the electoral system is designed to discourage working-class people from running for Congress.

She reported having between $15,001 and $50,000 in her checking account as of the end of April 2018, according to a Financial Disclosure Report she submitted to the clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The financial disclosure also reveals that she has an investment account valued between $1,001 and $15,000.

ocasio-cortez.png

This puts the socialist Democrat well above most American households, whose median checking account balance is $3,400, according to the latest Federal Reserve survey in 2016. Among Millennials, the median balance is about $1,400.

This also means that for her not to afford an apartment in Washington, she should have depleted all her savings – as potentially ranging up to $50,000 – in just three months when she wasn’t receiving any income.

Video
Ocasio-Cortez didn’t earn any income up until August, when she began collecting a salary from the campaign, an option many political candidates take as they have to quit their day job for campaigning.

She has taken $6,200 in salary from her campaign coffers since August. Her most recent check was for $1,288.96 in mid-October, just weeks before Election Day.

Ocasio-Cortez has since backtracked from the thrust of the issue, tweeting that her apartment situation is being sorted out and she’s “working it out.”

The Ocasio-Cortez campaign didn’t respond to repeated Fox News inquiries for this article.

Wow, so this is what passes for a scandal on the Democratic side?

She's a socialist and she isn't flat broke! LOCK HER UP!

She is the "socialist" but republicans are the ones telling her how to spend her money?

Either way you look at it she is not rich and DC apartments cost a shit load. Three months without a salary at the median rent is $10,800 with a security deposit. That doesn't include food or utilities. OmGeRz she is financially responsible! I know that is a foreign concept for the party of tax give aways

There are lobbyists that would happily pay for an apartment for her. Her refusal to accept money from her corporate constituents proves she's a communist.

This girl is something extra special.

She'll be patient zero when the movie Idiocracy becomes real life.

Funny, I read the whole story and the fact is your side is the one full of idiots. Plain and simple. You throwing stones with absolutely no substance is what the righties do. Y'all never have ANY plans except cut, cut, cut and no, no, no. While saying yes to giving billionaires tax cuts.

It's full of shit and I can't wait until 2020 when the people that actually govern take over.

Y'all are gonna lose the Senate and the white house in 2020.

Now I'm on Bill DeBlasio's side?

Giving Amazon tax breaks to bring 25000 jobs there that they otherwise wouldn't get it a mistake?

Not everybody lives off the land eating nuts and berries, hunting wild game with a hunting knife like you do.

Now I'm on Bill DeBlasio's side?

Giving Amazon tax breaks to bring 25000 jobs there that they otherwise wouldn't get it a mistake?

Stop calling them tax breaks.

The costs for infrastructure needed to support the 25,000 additional workers, their vehicles, their effect on rising housing costs, enormous hikes in utility costs... all needs to be paid for by the taxpayers who actually pay taxes.

Jeff Bezos is an anti-American globalist sociopath, just like Zuckerberg, Gates, and all those technerds.

Not one ounce of personal responsibility among them.

Not everybody lives off the land eating nuts and berries, hunting wild game with a hunting knife like you do.

True, but sad.

When it becomes necessary to do so, they and their loved ones will perish.

2012 already came and went. Is there another global supernatural disaster o'coming? Is it written somewhere?

Ocasio-Cortez compares members of migrant caravan to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez compares migrants to Jews fleeing Holocaust
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the star Democratic congresswoman-elect from New York, compared migrant caravan members who clashed over the weekend with U.S. border agents to Jewish families fleeing Nazi Germany and other targets of genocide.

Ocasio-Cortez, who was elected to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District earlier this month, tweeted over the weekend in support of those attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. She compared those fleeing violence in Central America to those who escaped Germany, Rwanda and Syria.

“Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime. It wasn’t for Jewish families fleeing Germany. It wasn’t for targeted families fleeing Rwanda. It wasn’t for communities fleeing war-torn Syria. And it isn’t for those fleeing violence in Central America,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted late Sunday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., fired back at the incoming freshman lawmaker on Monday, recommending she study the "differences" between Nazi Germany and the migrant caravan in Mexico.

"I recommend she take a tour of the Holocaust Museum in DC. Might help her better understand the differences between the Holocaust and the caravan in Tijuana," Graham tweeted.

Over the weekend, hundreds of migrants from the Central American caravan rushed the border at the port of entry in San Ysidro, Calif.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said some demonstrators “attempted to illegally enter the U.S. through both the northbound and southbound vehicle lanes at the port of entry itself. Those persons were stopped and turned back to Mexico.”

U.S. border agents shot several rounds of tear gas after some migrants attempted to penetrate various points along the border and threw what appeared to be rocks at U.S. authorities.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that some migrants "attempted to breach legacy fence infrastructure along the border and sought to harm CBP personnel by throwing projectiles at them.

"As I have continually stated, DHS will not tolerate this type of lawlessness and will not hesitate to shut down ports of entry for security and public safety reasons," Nielsen said. "We will also seek to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone who destroys federal property, endangers our frontline operators, or violates our nation’s sovereignty."

The Mexican Interior Ministry said Sunday afternoon it would immediately deport the migrants who tried to "violently" breach the border. The Mexican government described Sunday's events as "acts of provocation" that were "far from helpful" for the migrants' objectives.

President Trump told Mexico early Monday that migrants allegedly threatening to storm the U.S. would be sent “back to their countries.”

“Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries,” Trump tweeted. “Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!” Trump tweeted Monday morning.

The Trump administration has said asylum claims from members of a series of caravans originating in Central America must be processed outside the U.S., and that all those entering illegally will be denied. A federal judge has at least temporarily ruled against the policy, but the administration has taken steps to harden the border.

As of Monday morning, about 50 migrants had been detained after illegally crossing the border. The exact number of those apprehended is expected to be made public later Monday, a senior Department of Homeland Security official told Fox News.

In Mexico, Tijuana’s municipal government announced it arrested more than three-dozen migrants for disturbing the peace and other charges related to the crossing attempt.

Auschwitz museum: Important to remember Holocaust 'did not start from gas chambers'

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland issued a statement on Monday amid an ongoing debate between U.S. lawmakers over whether the Holocaust offers lessons for contemporary events such as those at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“When we look at Auschwitz we see the end of the process,” the museum said in a tweet on Monday afternoon.

“It's important to remember that the Holocaust actually did not start from gas chambers,” the museum continued. “This hatred gradually developed from words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence.”

The tweet came hours Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) slammed Democratic Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) for comparing recent events along the southern border involving migrants to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany.

"I recommend she take a tour of the Holocaust Museum in DC," Graham tweeted Monday. "Might help her better understand the differences between the Holocaust and the caravan in Tijuana."

Graham was replying to a tweet Ocasio-Cortez shared over the weekend, in which she wrote, "Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime."

"It wasn’t for Jewish families fleeing Germany," she continued. "It wasn’t for targeted families fleeing Rwanda. It wasn’t for communities fleeing war-torn Syria. And it isn’t for those fleeing violence in Central America."

Ocasio-Cortez also responded to Graham’s tweet later on Monday night, in which she told Graham “the point of such a treasured museum is to bring its lessons to present day.”

“This administration has jailed children and violated human rights,” she added. “Perhaps we should stop pretending that authoritarianism + violence is a historical event instead of a growing force.”

Ocasio-Cortez has since found support from many on Twitter in making her case, including from actor Ben Stiller, who countered Graham’s suggestion with his own.

“Just to add into this, I would say that @LindseyGrahamSC go visit Guatemala as I did earlier this year and talk to the families fleeing the terror of targeted gang violence an unlivable poverty rate to understand the refugee experience,” Stiller said in a tweet on Monday night.

“These people are fleeing for their lives,” he added.
