95.5 The Game has given Jim Rome's show the boot. MSP will now go until 10:00am and Brian Berger will host a local show from 10:00am-Noon.

I wonder how CIP feels about replacing his idol Rome?

Are they trying to kill the station? Will Steve Patterson by Brian Berger's sidekick/insider?

Rome's Great, but I'd rather watch Rome's Burning. I think this is a good move for NW Sports coverage.

This stinks. I don't love Rome, but I like national sports talk. I don't want to hear Blazers/Ducks content all the damn time. I'll be listening to the game even less now. Too bad.

But, there's only so much to cover locally. Were going to start getting break downs of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in mid-June when nothing is going on around here.

Believe it or not, a big chunk of the listeners of 95.5 couldnt give two shits about the Timbers.

Another horrible move by the station.

I turn the station every team John Strong or another host on that station start blabbing about the Timbers. It's not that I don't like the Timbers, it's just that I don't really care that much about them to hear them discussed outside of their games, and soccer talk on the radio just doesn't work, anyhow.

where is Rome going? Back to the Fan?

Not sure I like more local, although I do like some of the national shows. The Fox Sports shows are crappy, outside of one or two shows.

JT and Looney are awesome. So is Zakk and Jack.

Not only is Berger unbearable to listen to, but he actual is a douchebag!

looney is alright, don't like jt at all....the steve szaban show was better than zakk and jack but i don't listen to them much...overnight weekends on fox(ben maller show)>>all radio

After following Rome since his time in San Diego, I'm can easily be done with that show. I will miss the guests he could get, but the show starts sounding the same from day to day. Just not fresh me anymore.

Don't know how the game can fill in with all local shows in a town with one (and a half) professional teams.

Rome: OK, now we're gonna talk some smack with my man Derek Jeeter, who's having another hall of fame year. Derrick, my man, you're so awesome. What's up?

Jeter: Um, things are great.

Rome: Derek, you're so cool. Listen, can you hold on thru the break and can I hold your dick for you while you pee?

[7 minute break with endless commercials]

Rome: OK, we're back with the greatest player in baseball freaking history!! Hey Derek, I loved it man back in So Cal in 1998 when you got that hit, man.

Jeter: Which one?

Rome: HAHAHA, man, you're so funny. How do you find time to be so funny like that?

Jeter: Uh...

Rome: Hey, man, my main man, can you hold on thru the break?

[7 more minutes of mind numbing commercials]

Rome: OK, we're back with my idol of all time, Derek freaking Jeter. Hey, Derek, what's it like? I mean, explain to the clones out there what it's like to be so great and funny and handsome.

Jeter: Um, ......

Rome: Hey man, that's just so cool. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO TALK TO SHOW HOW COOL IT MUST BE TO BE YOU!!! I just can't believe I have you on the show! Look, just hand on thru the break.

[another flippin 7 minutes of idiotic commercials]

Rome: OK, clones, we're back with maybe the greattest athlete in history- Derek Jeter. Hey, Derek, tell me how you like bangin them homers at Yankee stadium?

Jeter: ............................................................................................

Rome: Um, Derek? Derek?

[7 minutes of commercials]

and on and on and on...

It used to be a good show, but now it's turned into a can of mush with endless commercials.

Rome is the master of the long pause & repetition. How he can stretch a 10 second sound bite into a 10 minute segment is rather annoying. Though I will say that local sports radio has extreme repetition, how often they talk about something in "hour 1" and then in "hour 3" they say "We're going to reset all those topics we talked about in hour 1 and talk about them all over again, lest we forget that the the show preceding this one did the exact same thing...".

I like JT & Looney at night & Ben Maller on the weekends. I find Zakk & Jack's voices kind of annoying.

Man, I wish I had that problem. I listen for about 8-9 straight hours starting at about 8am and the only time I hear the timbers talked about is on a sports update that they are playing that night, or played the night before...

All the things you guys dislike about the show are practically why I love it. Its practically ritualistic. Fridays are the best.

Can I get a quad noooo for Rome going off the air in Portland?

Sources at The Game say they dropped Rome because his ratings have gone down every month. It started out being the top rated show from 6am-6pm, but now is the worst rated. Their polls and ratings showed that their listeners wanted more local talk. They can also make more money without Rome because they dont have to give up commercial time to Rome's network.

Sports talk radio is all about repetition. When I was younger I wanted to be in sports radio so bad, but after interning at 910 THE FAN for about six months, I got tired of it. All they do is repeat the same shit over and over for three or four hours. It gets so boring.

Probably the nature of the beast, right?

I'm guessing most poeple listen to talk radio in the car. Personally, I want to hear all the top stories on the way to work, which takes about 20 mins. If others want the same info and people are in and out of their car at different times, I would think it would have to be repetitive.

Not just sports talk. Most talk radio I listen to is repetitive in nature.

This is so good, almost like you pulled tape on that show. Just need to through in some bs quad yeahs and that damn Friday song..

CIP shows that you could put a monkey behind a mic and still get good ratings if its sports talk.

I can't listen to Rome. The only Rome shows I can listen to are the ones when he has one of the better replacements - like the Sklar brothers or Jay Mohr.

Berger might not be the greatest ever - but he is much easier to listen to than Rome.

I feel for those folks who tune in every day; losing a radio voice can be in a little way like losing a friend. That being said, this news couldn't impact me less. I listen to sports radio when there's a game on or when there's something important happening with a team I care about.

Now, if OPB pulls Kristian Foden-Vencil off the air, then there's going to be a rumble!
