holy shit.

that takes balls.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered about 200,000 state workers to be paid the federal minimum wage because the state Legislature has not passed a budget.

Department of Personnel Administration Director Debbie Endsley sent the order Thursday in a letter to the state controller. Most state employees will be paid the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour for the July pay period.

Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear says the change should be reflected in state employees' next paycheck. Workers will be paid in full retroactively once a budget is passed.

The Legislature has failed to take steps to close California's $19 billion budget deficit, even as the new fiscal year began Thursday.

brass balls. first good thing I've seen out of this state in a while. Sucks for the employees, I'd expect some lawsuits. at least he's doing SOMETHING rather than nothing.

He needs to fire some people rather than paying them a little now and making it up later.

I would love to run for Mayor of Portland and clean house. There are so many worthless jobs in our city. I spent about six months interning in a city office and I could not believe the lack of effort or energy that goes into government labor.

How true!

Portland is lost. You couldn't do anything. And we wonder why our unemployment rate is so high. When you have a tax system and an anti-business attitude like ours, we shouldn't be surprised when we have no growth.

Absolutely right. I did an internship in a local government office in college, and I used to see people sitting at their desks reading novels. This is a fact about "government service" that never gets mentioned when new federal programs and initiatives are being discussed. These programs are usually a huge waste of money and resources, and a drain on the private sector.

I heard on the radio that the union made a provisions for every person you lay off, there is a salary increase. WTF

The real issue is that all public unions need to be abolished. When unions can help elect the people that will then decide on their financial future, of course we're going to have bloat and corruption.

It's pretty much the same, only now they spend their time on Facebook instead of reading novels.

I was impressed till I read that sentence.

You Republicans would get somewhere if you'd stop saying that programs should be eliminated, and start saying that government salaries should be decreased. That would have the same result in cost decreases, but we would retain all programs. Here's a July 2 article I read today.

I used to live in Sacramento - my state worker pals loved this joke:

"Three boys are on the playground. The first boy says my dad is Superman and he is so fast, he can get home from work in 6 seconds. Second boy says - that's nothing. My dad is the Flash, and he gets home from work in 1.2 seconds. Third boy says - I've got you both beat. My dad works for the state and he gets home from work an hour early!"
