Whatever happened to Proz and Conz? Local Portland hip-hop crew. If nothing else, people typically knew them for "Blasted Blown".

For you Quannum Label fans how about my NEP boys The LifeSavas?

Yeah, I saw them back in HS. Probably opening for Blackalicious or something. I remember liking them, but not enough to buy anything.

Hahahah, haven't heard that name in a loooooooong time.

I knew one of the dudes in the group. Worked with him for a summer. They were going to do something under the name I5, it was only part of the original group, but I lost touch with the guy I knew and never heard anything further.

They are around. Kevin was in P&C and does home remodeling now and still puts out some CDs on the side. Lance is around as well, but don't know what he's up to.

Lookin' pretty? He's one real cool dude.

But I didn't want to be the one putting people's names on the interwebs. Shit's bad enough these days.

They have beats man. DJ Rev. Shines has put some stuff out on his own that's nice and he spins great stuff down at Produce Row on Tuesday nights. And my man Vursatyle is about to release a solo.

You ever see the pic of The Lifesavas up at R&R Market?

Ha, is R&R still open? I've only been in there a couple times, so probably not. I think I actually do have 1 album of theirs. Must not have listened to it much though. I don't think I'd recognize any of their songs.

R&R got sold and now it's the newest Fire on the Mountain!

Nice. Did they take down the sign too? I can't remember a time when more than 3 or 4 of those bulbs worked at once.

They kept the bottom half and did a good job refurbishing it.

A lot of the talented "indie" guys get a lot of love from MTV and what not. Some of the guys have been around for decades, and many are far more talented than mainstream. It's worth spending some time to check out, if you're a hip-hop fan.

Brother Ali, Atmosphere, Felt, Murs, Cage, People Under the Stairs, CunninLynguists, St. Paul Slim, Sage Francis, Non-Prophets, Living Legends, Evidence, P.O.S., El-P, DOOM, Grayskul, Eyedea, etc. Most of these guys are associated with bigger names and members of other groups (i.e. like Evidence is from Dilated Peoples, Murs is a Living Legend, and also part of Felt). I know I'm leaving a bunch of other worthy names out, but I could go on for a bit...

I've listened to most of those guys. I'm just not the fan of hip hop that I used to be. You left out Andre Nickatina, Aesop Rock and Ace of Base.

Ace of Base is the Tits.

Nikatina I left off for personal reasons. I've got personal beef, Mano-a-Mano. Know him. Was a GIGANTIC fan before that. Rad dude to chill with though. Real fucking rad.

For the record:

I'm good partners with all 40 of Ali Baba's thieves.
Baby, don't act dumb, I'm number 41, High-Stepper.

Watchyu know about Swollen Members?

I was into them back around '02, but their style got boring to me. Back in my freshman year at UW, we drove up to Vancouver to see them play a show. The weekend up there was fun, except that 'show' was some 30 minute in store performance. Talk about not reading the details of the flyer, ha. For a great Canadian rapper, check out Buck 65. Way better (to me personally) than anyone in the Battle Axe crew or the Degrassi High kid.

If they just left him, say, in the trunk of a car for a few weeks, would there be Biggie Smells?

Yo Zags,

I just googled Ace of Base. It does not appear their website has been updated since late-2011. That can't be a good sign. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

On a positive note, 19 years ago from yesterday (3/12), "The Sign" reached #1 on Billboard Hot 100, and remained there for the rest of the year.
