The greatness of Dame

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

I had my doubts from the beginning. I compared him with Mo Williams (before Mo was ever on our team). I thought he wouldn't approach Chauncey Billups (whom Olshey compared him with). I was wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Whatever happens against Memphis, he has moved to the front of the All-Time Blazers. Let us bask in his greatness.

Holy Schnikees! I didn't realize Dame's 3pt% had reached 40% on the season! Sure lots of players hit 40% but not on the difficulty of 3 pointers that I see Dame taking.

Von Waffer, Raef LaFrantz, Afflalo, jerks! Some guys kept to themselves, shy but real cool like LA, Andre Miller and Gerald Wallace.

If VanVleet played here, I imagine he'd have to be on that list.

I'll also add that Bonzi was nuts.

I actually really liked Ruben and ZBO. They were always super chill. DA was.... very polished, but I think he was a nice guy. Every single player I ever talked to said they loved Sheed........ but Sheed hated the media so I never got to see it.

I think I’ve shared on here before that Dame is about as great OFF the court as he is ON. The nicest most chill dude. No ego or hotshot vibe going on with him whatsoever!

A story I don't think I even brought up to you, HCP.

When I went to do a truck tour and watch a game in the truck with HCP, we got to go on the court and watch shootaround. GTJ and Simons were out there with stotts on the sideline watching. We walk over to the broadcast area where I get introduced to Calabro. During my lengthy talk with Calabro I peeked over to the blazer bench and see Dame sitting down talking to someone. Not another player, not a coaching staff, but the security person. I thought "man, thats cool."

Fast forward more into my conversation with Calabro, I peeked 2 or 3 more times over at Dame and he's still in the same conversation with the same person. At times he has his arms over the back of the chair and making eye contact with this person. Completely engaged in what this person is saying, and his body language said the same thing. It warmed my heart so much. Here's a guy who could just be the superstar player, and not be interested in anything else but the sport he plays. But he was invested in this conversation -- this person. Its so refreshing to know that even when the cameras aren't focused on him, he presents himself as a humble, empathetic, caring person. Its something I will truly never forget.

I wanted to meet Dame but I didn't want to bother him or ask HCP. And that was okay, because I know if I had - he would have given me that same respect he gave that other person.

Its like when you say that player has that 'it' factor.

Dame, as a person, has that 'it' factor.

Great story, but it’s, THE HCP.

Yep, that’s Dame. He knows I’m a movie and music junkie like he is, so we’ve got into some heated debates on movies in more than one occasion. Should have seen his face when he first realized how much hip hop knowledge I have. It was hilarious. He loses me though when he goes on his WWF wrestling BS! We are definitely blessed to have such a solid dude represent us out there.
B-Roy was just as nice and humble, but didn’t quite have Dames charisma.

LOL He loves his WWF stuff. I asked him who his favorite wrestlers were on twitter and obviously it was stone cold. I forget he's only 7 years younger than me.

But yeah - super blessed. I think what gets me the most is no matter the interview or the interviewer, he doesn't give canned responses. It's always thoughtful.

I hate to be that guy, but Dame actually ended the regular season at 29.97ppg

also unfortunately missed the 50/40/90 club by a few FTs

So I have been trying to find the thread where I predicted Dame would average 18 and 8 his rookie season. I finally found it. I ended up being wrong. He averaged 19 and 6.5 his rookie year. He FINALLY averaged 8 assists in his 8th season... way to make a liar out of me Dame!

A couple of funny posts from that thread though...

Yes, I wasn’t sold on Dame. Said it here.....I wanted Kendall Marshall/Harrison Barnes/Andre Drummond

Thing is, I have actually told Dame to his face this. On a road trip in the lobby of our hotel, and he mentioned his workout for the Blazers....then said he swore on everything he was told was that the Kings were picking him.
I had worked a PSU/Weber State game and knew who he was, but I just wasnt’ sold on him. Should have seen the look I got from him when I said I wanted Marshall. He was actually a bit pissed. Said he and his agent reached out to work out with him and Austin Rivers and they backed out. Said NO WAY!

Took awhile for him to warm back up to me after that.....HA!

That takes balls.

"Dame, sorry, but I thought you'd suck."

Knowing how Dame carries a chip on his shoulder over slights like that, I think there will come a time when you go to your car after a game, find all four tires flat, and “Dame Time” etched into your paint.

The only other time I got busted by a player like that was because of S2. Greg blew his knee up and then a few weeks later Przybilla did. I posted in a thread on here that there was NO way we were going to make the playoffs that season.
Wheels was/is on here and saw it...... he waited until we were in LA and were sitting on the bench during warmups.....BRoy walks out and says whats up, sits down between us and Wheels felt THAT was a great time to tell B what I had said!!!!!! Straight sold me out right there. It was hilarious!!!!!

Today's headline ESPN article includes information on how Dame is revolutionizing the 3 point shot:

  • Lillard has made 54 of 130 (41.5%) shots from at least 30 feet this season. You're not supposed to be able to do that. As a whole, NBA shooters converted 22.9% of shots from that range.

  • Before this season, the record for most made shots from at least 30 feet was 25. Lillard made 54.
And if that wasn't enough, Lillard is also forcing us to reevaluate the fine art of multi-dribble 3s. He has become the most dangerous off-the-bounce marksman in the league. Of his 624 3-point attempts this season, a whopping 64% of them came after at least two dribbles. Leaguewide, only 19.9% of triples come after multiple bounces, per Second Spectrum tracking.

Only Harden has tried more multi-dribble 3s this season, but Harden can't match Lillard's accuracy. While Harden made a respectable 34.9%, Lillard drained a disgusting 41.6%. You're not supposed to do that either.

I can't remember who was saying it, might have been Kenny Anderson or Reggie Miller, but they were talking about the ease at which Dame shoots from halfcourt. The amount of upper body strength and control. It looks easy for Dame. He isn't struggling at all to shoot from that range. That's what makes him different from other shooters.

Yeah, although he's accurate, there is an amount of flinging the ball when Steph shoots from those distances. It just takes more effort from Steph because his whole thing is repetition of those shots whereas Dame practices a ton of those shots but also strength trains a lot and really makes sure his core is extremely strong.

I think teams doubling and trapping Dame is what molded him into the shooter that he is. He decided that if he was going to be able to get his shot off, he would have to evolve and take shots where defenses would be less likely to try to stop him. And defenses are having to evolve. Can you imagine how good this team would be if we had a distributor at the wing? Like.... young Batum and Aldridge. If we had that team we would be a legit championship contender. If teams still had to defend Lillard from half court, it would open up so many opportunities on offense.
