Pending childbirth puts availability in Asper’s hands

Oregon right tackle Mark Asper’s wife, Michelle, is expecting the couple’s second child this week, and any decisions about Asper’s availability to the Ducks for the birth are left to him, Kelly said.

“Whatever Mark needs to do from a family standpoint; family’s more important than football,” Kelly said. “He’s the head coach in that situation. He tells me what to do.

Well, what's he going to say? Get your ass on the football field? Firstly, he's not a paid athlete, so it's not his job. Second, it would look really bad if he told his player that the birth of his child was less important than a football game.
