I agree with you about the norm, but the NBA is hardly a normal business. One could argue that the NBA was stupid for creating the star system, instead of having strong team identity but no strong star identity... but that boat has sailed.

If they wanted to keep labor in their place, they shouldn't have made them into stars. Once the audience asks for players by name, then they can set their own rate. If the audience doesn't know the name of the point guard, the point guard is replaceable.

There's a huge difference between the NBA and normal businesses. Maybe I wouldn't be as good as some currently doing it, but I can go to school, and become a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, etc. I can be taught to work in a factory, to process transactions and what not. I can't learn to be tall. I can work on athleticism, but will not reach the level of ability those in the NBA have. No matter how hard I tried. The best of the best try harder than others, but in general, a lot of workers, as shitty as it comes across, can be replaced. Replace NBA players with lower tiers of players, and you get the D-League. Nobody's paying big money for that. There's a reason the employees are taking so much of the money.

Dude the money isn't the issue, it's the model. That is why I said % of gross sales, not the actual dollar figure. So this "D-league" you talk about. If the total economic business model is at the same 53% for players, they would fail too.

And I don't buy this "you can't teach tall". Looking at some of the most successful businesses, law firms, etc. They all have those "superstar" CEO's, attorneys or employees. Those types usually get the highest % of the salary pool. I have employees in my company that make a higher salary than I do because they have tons of talent. Of course my ownership gives me more money in the end, but we are talking just salaries. But if I tried sharing 53% of my gross profit, my company would fail.

You may not know about this "gross sales" factor; but it's money brought in; excluding taxes, supplies, expenses, soft costs, hard costs, employees, insurance, lease expense, legal expense, etc. And usually a company that margins 15-25% of gross sales, usually will make a 10-20% net profit. I'm sure some teams, like the Lakers, New York, or other large market teams aren't paying out the 53% of their gross. It's the small market teams that are forced to spend high dollar and get little return.
