The MLB Trade Deadline

I'm not too familiar with the legalities of MLB. Does anyone know what is the deal with the MLB Trade Deadline? It passed in late July yet teams are still making trades. Does anyone know why that is? For instance the Red Sox recently acquired Javy Lopez from the Orioles for cash considerations and a player to be named later, that was after the trade deadline. The sox also just traded for Erik Hinske from the Blue Jays. Why can this happen? Does waivers have something to do it? Anyone wanna explain it to me...

The july 31st trade deadline was the non waiver trade deadline, the august 31st deadline is the waiver deadline, a team can still trade during the waiver deadline, but another team with a higher pririoty can end up blocking a deal, and anything traded for a player for a example eric hinskie had to go through the open market, so another team could of stepped in and they would of blocked the trade from happening. I dont think i explained it that good but i tried my best so i hope you understand a little more now than you did before

Yeah I definately understand it better, I didn't really know about the trade/waiver seperate deadline. The media goes nuts with the trade deadline stuff and then all these deals are going on after the big trade deadline has passed. It's a little confusing if you don't know the leagalities.

It allows a team to trade a player, but limits the the ability of a team to just trade outright. Like for example, it's not like the Mets can call up the A's and just say, "Yo, can we have Zito?" The A's would first have to put Zito on waivers. At that point, teams can pick him up off waivers. In that case, the team with the lowest record would be able to actually trade for him or just pay a waiver fee. When Boston picked up Javy, they were basically the only ones that could afford him. Since Baltimore really wanted to be rid of him, they were able to pick him up rather easily.
