Could it get worse? Kansas law also establishes bathroom bounty hunter where trans spotters can search for people in "wrong" restroom, even in private stalls, and receive the $1000 fine trans people have to pay.
It makes me, a cis woman, feel really safe knowing bounty hunters are peering under the door of restroom stall in which I am relieving myself to ensure my genitalia match my gender presentation.

I am in NO WAY defending this BS out of Kansas, but (from the states POV), why make the drivers license be a sticking point?' Like, it's not like the state thought this through very well.

I get that it's (just another) way to dehumanize/ "other" a minority group, but in a way what's stopping people who are trans from going "ok, my drivers license says I'm M but I identify as a F" and basically saying "fuck you" and playing their game and using it against them?

I.e., they're trying to take away your ability to vote, so you basically say "ok, I'm a "man", happy? I'm still voting against your bitch ass and your bitch ass policies."

I totally get that it's undermining peoples rights to be who they are, and I'm not saying I agree with this policy in any way shape or form, but it kinda plays into their hands (a distraction). Sure, they'll just say "SeE? wE aRe RiHgT! YoU Is ThE gHeY!" but then you can go "ok, I'm still able to vote. What now ass face".

I realize this is easy for me, as a straight white guy, to say/hypothesize because it doesn't impact me, but there are bigger (related) things, and IMHO this is going to lead to ICE starting to target trans men and women and then after that gays. And this will, IMHO, eventually backfire in their face.

You are right. It is easy for you as a straight white male to say what's the big deal.
You have some kind of identity, don't you? Something fundamental to who you are? Would you consider it no big deal if the state forced you to deny who you are, live your life as someone you weren't? Renounce even your name?
Every day of your life?

Driving without a license is punishable by months in prison and four digit fined. They just revoked all of those licenses so unless these trans people have a support system good enough to drive them to the DMV to then go through the humiliation of being deadnamed, they’re fucked. And you know the book will be thrown at each one they can catch driving. Will their boss at whatever job they have let them take a day off? Never mind that this was added to a so-called “bathroom bounty” bill that lets anyone sue a trans person using “the wrong bathroom”. Again, the system is not going to go easy on them.

That would be a great way to get kicked in the face.

DUI hire gave Scouts 6 months to comply with anti trans policies, no girls, and military service badge or he will cut off contact between scouts and armed services.

Please show me where I said "what's the big deal". For the love of Christ, did you even read what I wrote or just knee jerk react to it?

I said the state is stupid because the people they want to target can just go "ok. I'm male/female" and still be who they are and vote.

Its an attempt to disenfranchise voters, and is a stupid thing to do because it's not like someone is going to all the sudden change who they are because the state says they have to match their "birth certificate"

I recognize that transitioning involves significant challenges — medical, financial, and personal — and I don't want to minimize those. But I do think it's worth acknowledging that trans people are capable and have agency just like anyone else.

I take the point about the broader legal context and the bathroom bill making things harder. But I do think getting an updated license, while inconvenient, is a reasonable ask — most people have to navigate the DMV at some point for various life changes. The real issue worth focusing on seems to be the accompanying legislation rather than the ID update itself, which could actually be seen as a positive step — a concrete, official recognition of someone's transition.

No this is not just like the ordinary driver's license renewal we all have to suffer through.
