I'd love to see him around. Such a banger. Can you imagine him tutoring Greg on toughness?

Not so long ago one of the NBA's most feared enforcers was New York Knicks forward Charles Oakley. Anyone who committed a hard foul on Patrick Ewing, John Starks or any of Oakley's teammates would find themselves the victim of a hard back screen, or just a devastating hack on the way to the basket shortly thereafter. Oakley was part player, part bodyguard in a much tougher NBA, and spent time with the Chicago Bulls, Knicks, Toronto Raptors Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets during a career that spanned 19 years. Now he wants to impart some of his knowledge to the big men of today's NBA.

"I'm going to try and get into coaching, so I've been going to games and trying to get a feel for the flow and the vibe because I think there's a lot to be taught," Oakley tells HOOPSWORLD. "I'm going to send a package to all the different teams around the league and try to set up two or three big man camps over the summer. I'd like to help today's fours and fives understand the game better."

Yes he would be a great coach for both Aldridge and Oden. Especially Aldridge. I would love to see him be a little more assertive with the teams we face.

I was around when Oak was in the NBA but not Lucas... but arent they essentially the same player?

Oakley was one of the best interviews in NBA history. So many great quotes.

True badass. The kind of guy you don't want to owe money to.

Just what we need - someone to teach Greg how to foul more. No thanks.

I think Mo is away from the team again with his health issues. I hope he gets better.

Coach Lucas sidelined
Blazers assistant coach Maurice Lucas has been unable to attend practices and games in the regular season because he is battling fatigue, McMillan said. Lucas underwent bladder cancer surgery in April and missed most of last season, but returned to the team this fall saying he would play-by-ear how much he would be involved with the team. "He's tired. Just tired," McMillan said. "He's trying to battle through it." McMillan said he will leave it up to Lucas as to when he returns and said he would not look for a successor this season.

Never happen. If they wanted the team to be tougher, I'm sure Kermit Washington would jump at a job offer. Being too tough on the court might compromise their media friendly/choir boy image.

Charles Oakley at his finest.

And another Oakley gem.

Oakley, who is no stranger to controversy, smacked McInnis, who was so livid that he had to be restrained.

"I saw Oakley coming out of the tunnel. He passed by Jeff McInnis, who was sitting on the bench, and socked him," recounted Orange County Register sportswriter Art Thompson. "Jeff tried two or three times to get back at him, but players and coaches held him back."

"I thought it was a little severe," Raptors head coach Lenny Wilkens said of the suspension.

"I didn't see what happened, I was in the locker-room when it happened."

"It was a single hit," Clippers head coach Alvin Gentry explained. "I just saw the aftermath of it, so who knows.

"We're not talking about the most mature group of people in the world when you talk about pro athletes, so it could have been over anything.

Ok, after reading this I'm sold on Oakley as a coach.

On today's Raptors

"You ain't going nowhere with 7-footers shooting three-pointers. You can't put four or five scorers on the floor at one time. You can, but you ain't going nowhere. You got four or five scorers on the floor, ain't enough shots in a game, in a quarter, for everybody to be consistent. You need your two scorers, outside threat and a post-up threat. You need your sixth man who can score. You need another guy that can just be an all-around energy guy, and you need another guy who can just, you know, play basketball."

On Vince Carter's early success in Toronto

"It was all Butch. Butch got in his ear and told him, `Do you know what you have with you? You've got some guys who care for you and are going to look out for you.' Me, Antonio (Davis), Kevin (Willis), we said, `Hey, Vince, we got your back.' Vince would have never excelled the way he did if it wasn't for Butch and some of the guys on the team, because we kept pushing him. We said, `You're better ... shoot as much as you want. We rebound. We set the picks. We keep guys off of you. They hit you, we're gonna hit one of them. It's like baseball. That was my attitude – if you're my teammate, you've got nothing to worry about."

"Over 60% of the NBA players smoke pot."

That was uttered waay back when, when it was controversial.
