At this point though, I wouldn't mind trying one of Stott's assistants, if they can develop their own playbook. Who coached our team in SL?

That just seems like a lateral move. I'd rather keep Stotts and the assistants. Firing stotts should only happen if there's a coach that can change things up for Dame/CJ.

The chances of us attracting a championship caliber coach doesn't seem great. Heck. Even Terry was hardly a proven commodity when he came here. Whoever we get next will probably an assistant with a great pedigree. Who knows? Maybe hell will freeze over and Jay Wright will get tired of coaching Villanova.

His podcasts are better than his game right now. Wonder if MIN would take him for Butler, I would do that in a sec.

I have 2 problems with Cj.

He gets his shot blocked a lot and when his shot isnt falling he diesmt find other ways to contribute. So far this season he is really struggling shooting, Dame is having to carry the backcourt losd.

Do you even know what ISO ball is?
I totally understand where you are coming from on this. ISO is a set play usually used at the end of a quarter or game. But the statement he is making isn't actually ISO so to speak. You have to admit CJ gets himself into bad situations by dribbling too much and defenses know he has a tendency to hold the ball and try too hard to create a shot. This is exactly what the report on him says. It also says he will push to find that opening on the left so he can switch to right hand. The other point on him is when he does try to pass it will be backwards or to his rear. This is professional NBA caliber ball. These teams know what he will do and they do counter his moves.
CJ even addressed this issue over the summer or at training camp. He specifically said he is going to work on finding more assists this year. That has not happened to this point. People complaining about CJ do have a point. Maybe they shouldn't call it "ISO Ball" but he is taking and trying to create bad shots.

CJ and Turner should never be on the court together - they should only be together when they attend a Ball Stoppers Anonymous meeting!

Those two don’t belong in the same sentence when it comes to playmaking for others. Turner is averaging 7 assists/36.

Blazers Asst/36
Turner - 7.3
Dame - 6.6
Stauskas - 3.0
CJ - 2.4
Curry - 2.0

That CJ is SO FAR behind Dame and ET given how much he handles the ball is a tribute to the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole.*

*(For the offended by almost anything crowd, this is not racist nor was it intended to be. It just happens to be the actual name of the movie.)

Oh grow up. I don't hate CJ.

And are you honestly going to tell me you'd rather have CJ than Klay? Because, you know...."numbers".

I can tell you what's NOT bullshit: 60 points in 29 minutes.

How's that for numbers?

I can't fucking stand Klay Thompson so yeah.. :dunno:

I'd rather have CJ.

Fuck Jon B...

Below average efficiency = Your narrative

Your narrative = crock of shit.

CJ has great career numbers.

Balls on your post.

I would submit CJ has very good scoring numbers and little else. 'Great' is reserved for those much more accomplished IMO.

Cj should play more like was Mathews did in terms of shot selection. Though he obviously can't post up like was, and cj is a better ball handler

One thing I've thought of is maybe C.J. is having a lot of inner tension about the role the Blazers are asking him to play. He's always been a high volume shooter who takes certain types of shots, and now with more role players to facilitate on the floor, maybe he's thinking too much about each shot. The fact that he's falling even more into idiosyncrasies as a player, means he's having trouble adjusting and then tries even harder. The same shots aren't producing the same results.

Haha you think anyone who does not share your opinion is wrong, you have no idea what you talking about. You so blind dude. I can give you straight 4 negative facts about him: Overpaid, inefficent, horrible Defender and Ballhog. CJ isn't a PG. He's kind of a tweener in many ways but he just doesn't consistently demonstrate the vision and court awareness of a PG. He carries way too low an assist/turnover ratio to be a team's starting PG in my view

in order for him to average 25 points a game, he'd have to have almost 22 FGA's a game (based on this season). Westbrook led the NBA in FGA's last season at 21 and Harden was the only other player to top 20. CJ is a good shooter, but he's only average as a scorer because he can't get to the FT line. If CJ is leading the NBA in FGA's, then he's a 1st option and a team with him as 1st option is going nowhere

that's not to say he's not a good player, he is. he's a very clever ball-handler in terms of creating his own shots and he's adept at finding creases in the defense and penetrating. And he's good at creating shooting space for himself. But what he's best at is the catch-and-shoot and spot-up game. That's the only area where he's consistently deadly. For all other shots he's below average in converting possessions into points.
I've said before I think his game should be more like Klay Thompson's and less like Dame. Because he sucks as a Dame copy, i can silence you straight with his below Average stats when he have to create his own shot dude. He has value, but not as the lead man. Have a nice day

Okay, lets discuss what you said...

You say CJ isn't a PG like he's doing something wrong. You do realize he's the team's starting shooting guard right? You say his skills don't match what a good PG should be. This season he's been almost exclusively used as a SG and they've gone away from having him be the primary ballhandler in the 2nd unit. His stats have gone down in that role. I posted Klay's stats in this thread. They are almost identical to McCollum's in every offensive category other than CJ is a better passer. Dame is the lead man on this team and also the starting PG so why do you keep saying that he has no value as a lead man or as a PG? Isn't that irrelevant to this conversation? So far this season he hasn't been the lead man on the 2nd unit (he did come into the game with the 2nd unit last game because he left the game early due to fouls but ET was mostly handling the ball) and he is struggling. So he's doing even worse in the role you want him to play.

What is the answer to that? Is it maybe just an adjustment period to a different role or is he actually better as the lead man? It's really hard to know the answer to that after just 5 games but you acting like his role isn't different this year is not helping your point.

I think the fact is CJ’s always been a guy who is either off or on, he’s in a slump but he’ll eventually get the shot on track. The issue with CJ is that he hasnt progressed past just being a streaky scorer. He’s never made any of his other skills elite. He is, what he is. I still think he's a good player but it wouldve been nice to see him become good at other things. Yes a shooting guard is meant to shoot, but he couldve worked on rebounding, defense, running the fast break, etc.

Fun fact about CJ; he’s the only guy on the team with a negative VORP. There are 340 players ranked above him (albeit some with smaller sample sizes, but still funny)

Butler is in the top 5. Same with Dame. Interestingly, so is Zach.

CJ is also ranked 300th in BPM and 260th in WS/48.

Objectively speaking, he has been Portland’s worst rotation player. Dame and Zach the best. Sounds about right to me.

Understandable given the two games we lost, he was a combined 12-45. I'm sure CJ will round into form but this slump has been bad.

Problem is he didn’t grade out favorably in any of those categories last year either. At what point does it become more than a slump?
