Dame and CJ really don’t play great together. It’s true!

CJ for Butler straight up
Plus “future considerations*”

*if Butler re-signs in the off-season with the Blazers, Blazers send top 15 protected first round pick to Wolves in 2019 and Wolves send Blazers a second round pick.

*if Butler does NOT re-sign, Portland gets Wolves top 15 protected first round pick in 2019 and Portland sends Wolves a 2nd rounder.

If the Butler experiment works in Portland and we decide to sign him and he accepts, it costs us CJ and our number 1. But we get back a second round pick.

Not bad.

I would like to see Dame / Stauskas / Butler / Aminu / Nurk with the rest of our second unit rotating in as they have been. I’m liking turner coming in as a point forward and Curry, Biggie and Zach.

We are potentially a better team. Better defensively for certain. I think the team above would possibly be playing the Warriors for a trip to the Finals.

The scenario with Butler demanding a trade is quite frankly, Portland’s one opportunity to add an All Star to the team. It’s not going to happen via free agency and CJ won’t make an All Star team playing in the West.

CJ for Butler straight up. Minnesota dumps Pattons expiring on someone with a TPE or Sacramento. We send that team a future pick or something. I don’t think Minnesota could realistically do better than CJ, and the idea that we could potentially do that trade tonight is frustrating, knowing it’ll never happen. We’re probably in the WC finals with this move.

I think we can all agree CJ regressed last season. I think we can all agree he is off to a bad start this season.

The question then becomes, how long does the team wait for him to return to his play of 2 seasons ago? And yes, his contract has to weigh heavily in this conversation. I don't pretend to know what is wrong with CJ - but his current level of play is not acceptable for a guy chewing up that much of the team's salary cap.

Saying that doesn't make me a hater - it makes me a fan who puts the team's welfare above the individual player.

If you look at his career, 2016 looks like the aberration, not last season, not this season. He’s still got value, but I don’t think we’ll ever get equal value back because of his contract. That’s what makes the potential Butler deal so interesting. It’s a huge opportunity to make an impact move. We wouldn’t get anyone near that caliber if he wasn’t a potential rental. Who knows when we’ll have another opportunity like that. Toronto took a similar “risk,” and DeRozan was much more ingrained in Toronto’s community/culture than CJ in Portland.

Honest question (not an excuse for his play): Do you think the Li-Ning shoes could be part of the problem?

CJ signed with them before last season.

Id love to have Butler tear apart our organization like henis with Minnesota.

If C.J. is really as bad as you make him out to be, wouldn't they be better off just cutting Butler?

I wonder what the real issue there is. Is he ripping his team-mates without justification - or is he causing trouble by speaking the truth outside the locker-room?

If it's the former, he is simply a team cancer. If it's the latter, it is more of a judgement issue. I'm OK with him calling out team-mates for being lazy and such...but he needs to do it in private.

Nah....Evan Turner is also wearing Li-Ning shoes, and he seems to be playing okay.

Kind of do wish, however, that someone somewhere would make an American-made Basketball shoe. I would like to think that they would be top-knotch, quality-made shoes that are custom-fitted to each player. I don't even think Adidas does this.

I mean, what would be holding NBA players back from wearing them? Price? :biglaugh:

He is as bad as he makes him. Wake up bones man
I love how youve become a know it all when you can't keep up in basketball discussions with the people you call out. Ironic. Ridiculous, actually..

If he's that bad, then how the hell is he enough to land Jimmy Butler???

I dunno. Sounds like he's a prima Donna and has serious character questions.

Perceived value vs actual value.

People think things are worth more than they actually are all the time. Portland needs to sell high.

There's a lot of people who still think CJ is a more impactful player than he is (although that number is getting smaller).

He's a good player, not a great player. If you can swap him for an upgrade, you do it.

Could be a reason why CJ is in a massive slump because he isn't the leader of the 2nd Unit anymore? And the fact that our 2nd Unit is much much better without him as the primary ballhandler confirms my oppionion about him as a overall negativ fit for the Team. Of course you can argue now that Stauskas and Curry is a Upgrade over Connaughton and Napier, and ET is doing a great Job leading those guys, but i'm pretty sure if CJ would be the leader, we wouldn't have this play from the bench each night

CJ's made slump still has him as a top 30 scorer in the league. I think the role change is impacting him, but it's not like he has yet imploded.

CJ was very painful to watch last night. We should all take a breath and let that game settle. I have to admit I was done after the second telegraphed lob pass. I didn't need to see two more after that.

I think we should realize if fans here get all bent on getting rid of CJ, it will/could be the beginning of Dame thinking a bit differently about his future. He would be the first to say CJ has won many game's for us and you need to let a player, play out of a slump, no way Dame would endorse moving CJ unless its for an all star that wants to be here for a while. Also, the team would not trade CJ w/o Dame signing off 100%, period. Its different than the Ed Davis. Now I could see CJ maybe requesting a trade, when his bride wants navigate to a warm weather, larger market! lol. Those to dudes and their mothers are very tight. Dame likes the identity that he and CJ have given the team. Just my opinion, doesn't make it right, and its doesnt make it wrong. Its called feedback!

I agree with some of what you said but not all. Yes the bench of ET, Nik, Curry and Zach is just plain better. 4 decent passers on the floor at once. Even as a CJ fan, I have always vehemently argued that he was not a PG. I argued that from the first summer league game in Vegas. That said CJ has often gotten hot playing with Dame and right now Dame is playing the best ball of his career playing next to CJ.

Yes CJ had a shit game last night. But watching the Pelicans periodically double Dame out high last night reminded me how much we need 2 other players on the floor with him who can also create their own shot when needed. CJ fits into that category. I expect CJ's points to go down this year. Hell I WANT his points to go down because that will mean we finally have other players who can score. There is only one ball and if Jake and Nurk can increase their scoring with the first unit than someone's stats have to suffer. But having CJ as a threat will only help them. We still need as many scorers as possible on the team so suggesting he is a bad fit makes no sense to me.

On another note......ET looked pretty good last night in the 4th playing along side Dame and CJ. Looks like we will see more of that.

So, he's a $25M decoy to make things easier on the rest of the starters?

That is definitely a legitimate concern... but I think it is overstated.

Dame and CJ are tight, but Dame is a big boy. He would understand if it made the team better.

Portland has already moved on from other players that he's been just as tight with (if not more so). Ed and Tim Fraizer just to mention a few.

I realize that Dame is a big boy!
But his loyalty to this town has been built on relationships and he certainly has a tight one with CJ. Im not saying he would even veto a trade of CJ, but if it was for a one year rental I think he would re-asses some things.

What would he reassess? If anything it would tell him the team is going all out to win, because Butler is objectively a much better player than CJ. Dame knows that. He’s loyal, not stupid.

Agreed. But I haven't seen anyone advocating for a 1 year rental (Butler is going to sign with whomever gives him the most $).
