I can promise you that pretty much all these findings are true. I saw way more dead birds driving I-84 out to the job than i ever did on a job or around a working wind turbine.
When I was a kid some of us use to ride our bikes over to the old Vaughn street sports stadium that was abandoned after Multnomah stadium was built. There were multiple concrete rooms underground. In these underground rooms you could find campfires where vagrants cooked their meals and kept warm. Around the campfires were always lots of bird bones, presumably pigeon.The more the homeless population grows the fewer birds.....then after the election crows will be in serious danger of extinction!

i built like 600 of these turbines out I-84 from Biggs Jct. to Stateline rd. area.

Point being about birds. Migratory birds fly very high and most local birds stay within 25-50 feet from the ground.
Those units are around 300 ft tall and the blades run 67-72 meters long. Tip speed ratio revolutions are about one revolution in 3 seconds at the very most. usually 4 seconds. No bird is flying that slow that it can't get out of the way for the most part but of course there are exceptions to every rule.
The one issue we had was mating season for some birds. During those times we had to stop. And if there was a nesting area close we had to move to the next and come back.
I have never heard of them shutting a turbine down to keep a bird from flying into it but they might at some times? Just never heard of that.
Now if you want to get into why some turbines are running and others are not when it is windy there is a whole other reason for that. Power Grid, Dam water release or lack of water, California buying power, Money Money Money for the owners of the land. County wind farm agreements. The contracts must be followed. Legal issues always take precedence right?
Didn't want to side track the thread- Just saying renewable energy is very viable and no i personally have not seen a bunch of problems with birds and i built like 600 of these turbines out I-84 from Biggs Jct. to Stateline rd. area.

It's called Pitch and Yaw. Yes they do this to get optimum directional variance into the wind. Each windfield is built into sections of turbines. Shepherd's Flats in Arlington Or has 337 turbines. Most are set in groups of around 10-15 on various ridges. Before construction is started they do a couple years worth of data gathering on weather tendencies. Then they build small weather stations all around the area that monitor wind speed and direction as well as peak gusts and possibility of Lightning and of course temperature. Today's Wind Turbines are engineered to harness wind speeds as low as 5 mph. If you watch one long enough you will see it pitch it's blades flat and shut down. All of the units in it's cluster will flatten the blades and stop turning. Then they will Yaw into the direction the wind is coming from for peak performance. Then they will pitch back into the wind like a sail and start turning again. Not only does that make the unit more efficient but it also keeps high winds from damaging them. If you get a storm with high winds like 60-70 MPH they will pitch flat and essentially pinwheel because the Tip/speed ratio is too high. It will burn out the generator and the blades are made of a composite of fiberglass and aluminum with steel shafts to give them a rigid connection. They don't want those to get damaged because the cost of replacing them is very high not to mention dangerous.They now can tilt.

I love this shit. Talking about windmills and murder hornets is more worthwhile, and more entertaining, than trashing trump or yammering about supply side economics
