Looks like we are in for a long 2-3 years of sub-par play, for a Team, that defines success by their World Series Rings........

Long term, multi-million $$$ contracts, have destroyed the Yanx like Cancer, and its a long slow death.....and I'd put my money on Trashman repeating his mistakes of the past.....

This article is interesting in some ways, in others its a double edged sword. We all know many of these Free Agents of 2018-019 are going to come with even higher price tags. "Bryce Harper- the first 400 Million Dollar Man"? The other half of these players, will either see extensions, or fall victim to being a "has been", does anyone really expect half these players noted in this article; to continue to play into or past their mid 30s, like they have the last few years. Has been's by then....

The other half, over priced, beginning a new era of greed, like we've never seen. IMO, Trashman will make the same mistakes of his past, handing out guaranteed, multi-year contracts, with multi-million dollar auctions, that may easily hit 40 Million dollar players......? Did I hear 45 Million, 50 Million? going once going twice, going gone......

Kershaw can opt out after 018, but will He follow Grenke's moving out? It's all about the money, don't let anyone tell you otherwise....

Here's the article, in italics, with the URL link continuing on with this story, followed by the Yanks payroll breakdown by year.....

We knew coming into this offseason that the winter market would have a lot to offer. David Price, Zack Greinke, Jordan Zimmermann and Johnny Cueto gave the market four ace pitchers, and Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Gordon and Chris Davis were the cream of the position-player crop.

Next to what's going to be out there after 2018, though, that's a collection of talent we can disregard with a "meh."

As Tony Castrovince of MLB.com and others have pointed out, the 2018-19 free-agent class is going to be loaded. Loaded as in L-O-A-D-E-D. Slated to be available are...

  • Three MVPs: Bryce Harper, Josh Donaldson and Andrew McCutchen
  • One Cy Young: Dallas Keuchel
  • Additional Amazing Bats: Manny Machado, A.J. Pollock, Michael Brantley, Dee Gordon, Adam Jones, Nelson Cruz, Hunter Pence and Adrian Gonzalez
  • Additional Amazing Aces: Jose Fernandez, Matt Harvey, Shelby Miller, Garrett Richards, Jose Quintana and Adam Wainwright
  • Amazing Relievers: Craig Kimbrel, Trevor Rosenthal, Zach Britton, Andrew Miller, Jeurys Familia, Kelvin Herrera and David Robertson
"That's decent talent," one general manager told Castrovince, presumably with his tongue firmly in his cheek. "That's a good year."

If Kershaw opts out of his contract after 2018, he'll only be forgoing two years and $65 million.

That's one way to put it. And all this is without considering two other players who could hit the market via opt-out clauses: Clayton Kershaw and Price.

So, yeah. This winter's free-agent class may be the best baseball has ever seen, but it figures to hold on to that title only as long as Mark McGwire held on to his title as baseball's single-season home run king.

Now, are all of the aforementioned players going to hit free agency? Presumably not, no.

Rest assured, there will be contract extensions. Teams haven't been afraid to offer them, and players haven't minded accepting them. They could wait for a bigger payday in free agency, but the lure of instant and long-lasting financial security has proved to be too powerful for many players to pass up in recent years.

Yankees Future Payroll:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/2015-payroll-salaries.shtml

I don't want to be a naysayer, but Cashman has yet to prove he's a worthy GM. I'd love to be proven wrong, and hope Bird, Severino, Judge, and many other Yankee Minor League Prospects pan out. Yet, lets face it, the Yanx farm clubs are not bursting at the seams, with Top Prospects, sure they have a few who stand out, but nothing like some MLB Team Farm Club Prospects.

In the meantime, its going to be one long cold winter, from now until the Winter Meetings of 018-019, one that will make for a Team that's made it hard to pull for-let alone get behind them. Will the future see more players jumping off of the Yankees bandwagon, or on it....?

A couple of days ago I saw photos of the empty stands at the 49ers Levi Stadium. Seems that folks are disenchanted with the franchise honchos. Also read that '15 attendance at Yankee Stadium was the lowest since 2000. Maybe we'll see a niners duplication as the ownership & management of the Yankees seek mediocrity over excellence. Damn shame what this franchise has gotten to now six years since a last Series win. A real crock!

Unfortunately empty stands don't hurt the Yanks with the magic $189M payroll number. That number factors in the cable/TV revenue....everything else is bonus for the Steins. Given their other biz holdings, I just don't see them giving a crap about attendance.

What we are witnessing is the "slow fire sale".... a slow bleed off because they can't shed the debt any faster with these aging players and contracts. Either they completely retool for 2018, or that is the year they sell off the team.

FWIW.....

There's $184.5M for 2016 just between 11 players,

Sabathia.......................$25M
Teixeira........................$22.5M
Tanaka.........................$22M
Ellsbury.......................$21M
Rodriquez....................$20M
McCann.......................$17M
Beltran.........................$15M
Headley........................$13M
Gardner.......................$13M
Miller............................$9M
Castro............................$7M

NOTE: Final year for Teixeira & Beltran.

Last season I got an e-mail from Steinbrenner Field detailing a Spring Training "opportunity" for Yankee Fans. For the small price of 400.00 + Dollars you could meet and be photographed with your choice of two Yankee Players. The damn players ought to thank their asses that fans want autographs and photos with or from their favorite players. As I enter year 61 of fandom I am not confident of events happening in the '16 season.

I totally agree on this one Michael, who in their right mind would pay even 50$ to have a pic taken of any one single current Yankee right now, since Mo' and Jeter retired....? Shit, for what its worth, the Players should be paying the Fans to get their Pics taken with a Fan, only a fool would shell out $400, yet, I bet there are a few fools out there.

What a helluva different (lack of) ambiance b/t the Yanks of the 95-03. Even with Mo', and Jeter, $400 is effing ridiculous.

I have never paid more than $25 for a players autograph, and those were Legends, ie DiMaggio, Williams, Mantle, Feller and Musial,...

As we know, 189 was an ideal that got blown up by Tanaka and Ellsbury. However if they do move Gardner....its achievable. Frankly I would have kept Murphy and moved McCann if we're making age/$ based decisions.

Yeah. There will be no rings for the next few years. And
I'm resolved that my ass will not be sitting in any of the
Yankees' overpriced seats!

But that will not detract my love for the game. I'll be going to
many minor league games this coming season.

...Tote, we've been down this road and hashed it out a few times before. We're most all aware of the money generated by TV deals...but to again suggest that gate money, concessions, memorabilia revenue is somehow inconsequential or unimportant is simply not true.

...if it weren't, they'd simply open the gates to everyone with no admission charge and provide the patrons free food, beer, souvenirs, etc., for free. Slice however you like, but money generated by fans at the ballpark as well as globally, contributes a significant amount to the Yanx' bottom line.

...speaking of the "bottom line" I do however agree that it's entirely possible that the Steins are simply making the franchise appear more attractive to potential buyers by trimming costs and financial fat.

Yeah, I know. Not trying to make a zombie here.

Look I've looked at the numbers that have been disclosed and looked at them again after you guys disagreed with my analysis. One the low side the Steins lose $50M, on the high side its $150M due to poor attendance. So roughly $400k to $2M per game. Now balance that against the opportunity cost and value proposition of reducing all tix prices. My assumption is that they have run the numbers and to get tix priced for 90%+ attendance, that discount rate is costing them about the same with higher prices & poorer attendance. These boys are biz guys first, not baseball men. A baseball man does the right thing....cuts prices and fills the stands, maximizing the experience. A biz guy follows the lowest effort value proposition and sets things up to hedge against variables like non season tix holders.

Also, in terms of lost revenue, we also need to look at the profit % that money represents. In its entirety, Legends Hospitality only makes $800M/yr across their entire portfolio (MLB, NFL, college sports, tourism, etc). Although that Forbes number does seem low for all of Legends.

Keep in mind that 2011 the Yanks were EBITDA +25.7M on $427M revenues. This includes Stadium debt financing. So that could also be part of the equation for thevSteins, keep rev neutral or slightly negative for tax purposes until the Stadium is paid off.

Now for just about any other team/ ownership group....gate take is going to be key to the finances....but I'm guessing that the Yanks have a formula and that is aligned with their future disposition.

Amen, I will be doing the same, Minor League Games are the bomb, the California A+ League is full of talent, and has seen the likes of many greats, from Griffey Jr. to Trout, then a helluva lot more, those rosters of ex-players on the Local Team, Lancaster Jethawks, began in 96 with the M's org, for 5 yrs, then the Bosox for 1 year, the D'backs for too many years, and the Stro's for the last 9 or so........

gotta' say watching A+ ball, with plenty of guys headed up and making a splash latter on, is a thrill like no other, except perhaps NCAA ball. Either is fine.

I loved going to the Macon A games, the short 2 yrs I worked in Ga. What a Stadium, 2nd oldest Minor Lg stadium in existence, built in 1929, don't know what the 1st oldest stadium would be,

Aha, the very roots of "The Plan" have been exposed....!

Even though I won't be expecting any rewards, Playoffs etc, I'll still be watching every game.

...I get your basis, and no one has ever disputed the importance of TV money or the large percentage it represents, but ALL revenue is still revenue no matter what the source...and if you take away money generated by the fans at the ballpark alone, no matter how you slice it, when the dust settles the P & L sheet or "EBITDA" would be much much less attractive and would likely show a net loss for the Steins.

Ron...exactly. These guys aren't incompetent, this is by design. I suspect there are some tax advantages being leveraged due to the debt instrument.

In total, this is all either sale prep, or alignment for major future moves. Based on Cashmans 3 yr deal, 2017 off season is when we could expect major activities.

Until then, this franchise is sucking mlb hind tit.

Going forward they (Yankee owners) need to find some seat fillers to sit behind home plate because seeing all those empty seats every game looks really pathetic. And announcing the exaggerated attendance doesn't help.

..Tote, and Rick, this is exactly why I'm so frustrated and pissed by the way this franchise has been so poorly mismanaged...this so called "plan" should not even be implemented because like I've said many times before, this is not the Marlins, Astros, Rays, A's, Braves, etc.,...Sorry, but waiting for 2018 doesn't cut it with me... the Yanx don't "rebuild", but instead, they simply "reload" on the fly...and they've allowed the team to flounder in mediocrity far too long while we cross our fingers, sit on our hands, and obediently wait for the next core 5 to arrive.
...the 90's dynasty teams were build around a solid core of home grown stars like Bernie, Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, and Mo. Other pieces of the puzzle like Cone, Tino, ONeill, etc., were added to fill out the roster.. And we all rooted for them wish a passion.....but nowadays, what/who is there to root for now?...who is now "the face of the Yankees?

...what has happened and continues to happen on Cashman's watch, borders on criminal IMO...and the Steins should hang their heads in shame for allowing it to continue.

I'm fearful that by the time our young core get a chance to play that they're going to be in there mid 20s.

I'm surprised they haven't used cardboard cutout humans, like they often have in Baseball Movies.......! Now watch, we will see just that, doh-
