I know this season just started but because it has started so well and the potential I see I am already thinking of who we can add next summer to make us a contender as quickly as possible. At this time my number one choice is HASSAN WHITESIDE

He is a UFA next summer and I think he would be a perfect C for this team and he fits in nicely age wise as well. He is a two way player and great shot blocker as well as a great pick and roll guy. Assuming he's not a knucklehead I think with him we could become a contender much more quickly, if he has another good year we are probably looking at 15-20 mil per, given that Monroe or Kanter was in that price range and we went after them I think Whiteside is the better player and fit for us, again assuming the knucklehead exclusion. Can we attract a C like this to Portland is the Q.
 
I remember really wanting us to take Whiteside in the 2010 draft. Obviously it has taken him a while to put it together but I saw a ton of potential in him. There's no way to know if we would have taken him but unfortunately he was drafted right before we selected Armon Johnson. I'd love to have him.

Looking down the list of free agents in 2016, there aren't many that I'm very interested in. Kevin Durant (duh!), Al Horford, and Hassan Whiteside are about the only ones that even interest me at all (only looking at unrestricted). I'm guessing that the Blazers look to improve the team thru the draft and trades rather than free agency.

Problem is deciding what position we need. Or maybe not. Really we just need the best 3rd option regardless of position.

The guys I think could be our 2nd or 3rd option don't seem all that get-able though.

One guy I like (under the radar guy) regardless though is Vasquez.

I don't think Durant would want to come here, but I do think Durant may would want to go home to DC if they stay relevant and he decides to leave the Thunder. Maybe the Wizards have to let Beal go in order to get Durant. Would be a crazy thing to see after what happened in OKC with Harden.

Edit: Also we don't have a shot at Drummond because Detroit will give him a Max contract similar to what Dame got, and if they don't there are about 20 or so other teams in the league who would.

You don't think we should try to upgrade the starting unit or 2nd on the depth chart at any position?

Keep in mind there 7 Blazer free agents on that list. I promise you not all of which will be back next season.

Well of course but I also agree a bit with Nate that the list doesn't really let you do that at any and every position. We are going to have to look at trades imo.
 
Honestly, this summer will be nothing special for big signings (for us). I think we are gonna ride with this current roster for the foreseeable future. I mean, if a sexy trade came along, (like George or Cousins) do it. Other than that stay put and make smart moveable signings.

That's true and I think we will probably end up having to do a little of both if Neil feels a change is needed. It's early to really get into this too much but it could be fun to keep an eye on it as the season progresses. 5/7 Blazers are RFA (Meyers, Harkless, Crabbe, Frazier, Alexander) the 2 UFA are Kaman and Henderson. I'd wager that at most 5/7 free agents are still around next season. I guess until that time of the year its up to you to speculate which of our free agents Neil will keep, and then who on that list he could be looking to bring in as a substitute.

For me I feel like he will be looking for a 2/3 guard, or a solid backup point guard. Mike Conley is an interesting name off of that list. If Memphis doesn't pick it up this season they could go into rebuild mode and look for a new identity. Conley being known for his defense likely wouldn't be part of a change like that.

I can also promise you that Jeff Green will not be a Memphis Grizzly next season. He's getting traded 100% unless he finds a way to make it work in Memphis. If they don't trade him he walks. The whole experiment has been a train-wreck from the start, but Green is still a talented athlete. However to be honest I'm not sure I wan't to be the team who takes him in.

Whiteside would be very, very good. That being said, I think the next long term prognostications should really go toward the trade deadline.
 
This all hinges on if were a playoff team or near the bottom. If were a borderline playoff team I wouldn't mind bringing in Joe Johnson as a third guard. We can overpay him for a one year deal. I would also like to pursue Horford as another versatile big man that can pass next to Plumlee.
