The Summer of 2016

I think about the only thing I truly hate about this year's team is that we're going to fall so very hard in love with so many of these guys and then too many of them are going to be traded or let walk for another fling next summer and we're going to take it so very f**king much harder than we did with Allbitch, Wes, et al. And that sucks....enjoy this group while we can....But I wish Neil would add just enough seasoning and then let it all simmer for another season or two...,,

With the cap increase, demand is going to out-run supply. Solid players like Aminu or Davis will be getting Wes Matthews type deals. Buyers' remorse will be rampant.

I know some people don't want to hear it, but trades and the draft are the more realistic option.

You don't think we should try to upgrade the starting unit or 2nd on the depth chart at any position?

Keep in mind there 7 Blazer free agents on that list. I promise you not all of which will be back next season.

Vasquez would be an upgrade at backup PG.

That's true and I think we will probably end up having to do a little of both if Neil feels a change is needed. It's early to really get into this too much but it could be fun to keep an eye on it as the season progresses. 5/7 Blazers are RFA (Meyers, Harkless, Crabbe, Frazier, Alexander) the 2 UFA are Kaman and Henderson. I'd wager that at most 5/7 free agents are still around next season. I guess until that time of the year its up to you to speculate which of our free agents Neil will keep, and then who on that list he could be looking to bring in as a substitute.

For me I feel like he will be looking for a 2/3 guard, or a solid backup point guard. Mike Conley is an interesting name off of that list. If Memphis doesn't pick it up this season they could go into rebuild mode and look for a new identity. Conley being known for his defense likely wouldn't be part of a change like that.

I can also promise you that Jeff Green will not be a Memphis Grizzly next season. He's getting traded 100% unless he finds a way to make it work in Memphis. If they don't trade him he walks. The whole experiment has been a train-wreck from the start, but Green is still a talented athlete. However to be honest I'm not sure I wan't to be the team who takes him in.

Mike Conley is not going to be a backup point guard anywhere. He will go somewhere and start if he leaves Memphis. Jeff green is not better than Harkless or Aminu. Greivis Vasquez is probably very getable as a backup point guard. I think he would fit very nicely. Bottom line is we will probably be looking at trades instead of the free agent market.

I agree. I think Neil might push it to next summer and keep letting the young guys develop.

You're probably right, he will get paid big and start somewhere. But you never know what the demand for somebody is going to be, great players sometimes get undervalued. I agree on Jeff Green, I was mentioning him more to show that Memphis has a legit dysfunctional situation on their hands.

Vasquez has had a very average career. If we are replacing any of these guys for somebody else I've got to think its for somebody better than average.

Vazquez is a huge upgrade from Frazier IMO. He's also a big guard who can play solid D. He's a pass first point guard that I can get everybody involved in the 2nd unit. He's a much better player then Frazier

So then you are agreeing with Rollin in the sense that you think we need to upgrade the 3rd string for depth, not the starters or bench?

Frazier is basically the 3rd string PG with the depth chart showing 1. Dame 2. CJ, wouldn't you say?

Well, Neil seems to think that CJ should be the backup point guard. While in Neil I trust, I think CJ would be better served as strictly being a shooting guard. Vazquez would spell Dame and CJ would remain at the SG position.

To answer your question completely, I think we need to see how it shakes out this season to determine who needs to be upgraded in the starting lineup.

And to be fair Vazquez has also played a lot of backup SG. He can hit the open 3 in addition to dishing the rock.

We might be better off resigning Meyers and Harkless and be done with it. If Henderson fits in well, we could resign him too, or look at a guard like Vasquez, but so many teams are going to have a ton of money to spend.

Raymond Felton is a free agent. What do you guys think about him?

Didn't last summer teach you guys anything? None of you know what direction or players Olshey will go. No one came close to coming up with the players he did this summer.

It would be amazing if we could get Patty from the Spurs -- UFA in 2017. He would do well in Stotts' system. Unfortunately he's the PG of the future for the Spurs and I doubt they let him go.

Cuz no one thought lamarcus would leave.

Sorry man, but useless thread. Other than for bumping around the trade deadline/all star break.

Why? Because we still don't know what we really have. The guys are coming out of the gate hot and that's great, but we have guys on the injury wagon that are supposed to have high potential and they havent touched the court yet.
There are just wayyy too many X factors to seriously try to pinpoint a free agent.... let alone the actual position(s) of need. Things are going to get crazy mid season with people making moves planning on having more money to spend.
Free agency will be tough for us, but trades... I thin trades are where we improve the team and again... I don't want to trade anyone without a longer duration of evaluation. However coming up on the trade deadline, we should have a pretty good picture of who isnt cutting it and where we need the most help.

With that said, I think your on the right track. We will be a playoff team next year if NO has the same trade/offseason this coming year that he did this last year.... and then the year after that we should be in contention again.
