My first reaction was shock and disappointment.
Now that the initial feeling is gone, I see where this could be a good move. It's a cheap, non-guaranteed contract which is a big piece of deal.
I think we'll get his best team effort. He wants another contract and this may be his only shot at a future deal. He has to know this is Dame's team and if he wants to stick he'll have to do more than volume shooting.

One question for all: will he start? If not, what does the second team look like now?

Melo doesn't start, his offense is more needed on the second unit and his defense is less of a liability. I expect him to play with Dame and or CJ when they are trapped heavily though.

He isn't really looking for a future deal $. He wants to have a better legacy and end to his career than being cut from the Rockets and zero interest in signing him. He wants a swan song season as Wade/Dirk/Kobe had. Hey if he can provide anything this year I'm happy to let him do that.

We've not been a good passing team since Andre Miller from the pt guard position...Batum and Plumlee were above avg passers but passing is something there's no quick fix for with this 10 new player version of the Blazers....timing will get there but I fully expected a lot of turnovers early on with so many young or new rotation pieces.

We should just embrace our strengths; elite one on one players in Dame/CJ/Simons/Melo. We pass enough to have a functional offense and prevent opponents from trapping. But passing is not going to be a key to winning games.

If somehow we can get above .500 then scrape into the playoffs maybe we get guys healthy in March.

Nurk/Whiteside
Collins/ Melo
Hood/ Bazemore
CJ
Dame / Simons

Who knows how healthy the LA team duos are in April, if they are healthy we probably don't have a chance regardless. If they aren't 100% the west 1-8 has a lot of parity.

I'm all for this Melo experiment. If its a disaster we cut him and tank this mess of a season. If it works; it'll be a fun ride.

In the last 2 years, Carmelo has shot 40%, which is terrible....
.....
.....
.....
At least that's what I thought before I checked this:
Baze 36%
Mario 32%
Tolliver 24%
Little 32%
Trent 33%

40% would not only be an improvement, it'd be a big one.

Bonus: CJ 41%

How is it that Portland signs Carmelo and is still the second least interesting Trail Blazers team according to ESPN?

Nurk is an underrated passer. He might force the issue on occasion, but he will also create a couple easy shots every game. HW is a blackhole with the ball.

Yes, but we are talking about Melo here. You know? 10x All-Star Carmelo Anthony.

I only read the first quarter of this thread, but I assume someone made the obligatory observation that we just need to get "Olympic Melo" and we'll be elite?

I agree with HCP--Anthony needs to play all game. He brings the "respected legend" factor, which may not mean anything for basketball production but is still a thing.

We got fat Kemp, now we're getting washed-up Anthony. My expectations are low, like they were for Tolliver.

Nah, we have Hood y Melo. That is best Melo.

I posted that in a thread...last time I saw him play was with team USA and he was the best player on the court more often than not...dude has 3 gold medals...he's going to love playing for Stotts who will let shoot all the open shots he wants

Last season, Melo shot a career high 49% from 2 point range.

And a TS% for past two years equal to the worst year of his 16 year career, and 5% lower than Aminu’s last year. And a god-awful BPM of -5.9 equaling Hezonja’s worst year, which is quite a feat.

I look at Melo's last 3 stops as pure chaos...starting with Knicks culture in general before those 3 teams....Chris Kaman came here with baggage, Nurk came here with baggage, Mo Harkless came with baggage....I think Melo has a real reason to ball out and not end his career with failures. He'll finally play for a coach who will say......you got a good shot, take it

remember when Olshey said this new roster was going to stretch the floor better and create better spacing than last year's roster?

Last season, Melo shot a career high 49% from 2 point range.

c'mon man...sample size...it was only 10 games and he only attempted 57 shots. The year before he shot 43.7% over 78 game while attempting 694 shots. Over both seasons his TS% was .503 then .513. in the last 2 seasons, Evan Turner shot .504 and .520. In other words, Melo shot worse than Turner....yikes!

If that’s the case then why are we all up in arms over our players shooting percentages? It’s only been 12 games...
Melo takes more shots then turner. He’s easier to shot 50% when you’re taking two shots a game
