I think about how many top 5 recruiting classes FSU, Texas, Miami, Michigan and Clemson have had in the last 15 years. Then I think about how many national championships they've won in the last 15 years...... guess point made......
Bama, USC, OSU, Florida and Oklahoma have paid out with their classes..... but that has a ton to do with coaching, location, TRADITION, school, facilities and alumni support!
Oregon is the flashy new golfer to the old country club and we have to get some wins to be allowed to become a member! It'll take 10 years of success but we're on the right path and we are now nationally being talked about. Five years ago we'd just be a fun story for the Pac-12.....

That's a very good and telling article. But it's also short sighted.
However, when a team recruits well (and we are) it also adds depth that wins games. In the past, we've had great starters, but no depth- those were 5-8 win teams. When you have depth you can rotate players more and second stringers (and even 3rd stringers that are just happy to be here) play more and are more inclined to stay and be productive- that translates to 8-12 win teams. We see second stringers from USC go to the NFL every year (as an example).
Another thought is coaching. Good coaching keeps players here, weeds out the bad apples sooner and makes players better. Right now, we have good coaches and they create a good atmosphere.
Lastly, not all football players are here to start and play in the NFL. Some just like the town, or campus, or are seeking a good education. That's why we seem to be looking at character a bit more so than 3-10 years ago.
It all adds up.
